Fishing Contest:

striperdrop.gif (4964 bytes)

Our Fishing contest is free for all who participate.  There is no entry fee.  There is no registration forms.  Just come down to the Park, throw your line in the water and enjoy yourself.

We have plenty of fishing equipment for your kids to use!  FREE!!   Rods, Reels, Bait!  FREE!!

Just come to the main HRFA tent and let us know you need to borrow whatever you need to catch the big fish!

If you need help, we will be there for both adults and kids. This is our 21st year of providing this contest.  It is open to all ages.  The HRFA NJ will provide free bait and fishing instructions to all who ask.  Parents who know nothing about fishing will be assisted as much as possible by one of our members to give personal assistance.

You should bring your favorite rod and reel but don't feel bad if you do not have one as we have plenty to lend out. FREE!  Members of the HRFA NJ will show you how to tie a proper knot, bait a hook, remove a fish and tag a fish.  We have hooks and sinkers for sale but you should bring your own fishing rods and reels.  We have a number of Rod and Reel combos to lend out but can run out with the size of the crowd.  Get there early!

Do not be overly concerned with bringing the wrong size rod or reel or line.  Bring what you have.  It will catch fish. Recommended rods are any size rod from 5 foot to 7 foot. Spinning rods and reels are easier casting for youngsters than bait casters. Line can be anywhere from 8 pound test to 17 to 20 pound test. Catch and release is suggested with tagging demonstrations given to all fish released.

Prizes will be provided by the Hudson River Fishermen's Association. Fish expected to be caught will be catfish, white perch, Tommycod, and striped bass. Fish will be in the 2 to 5 or 6 pound range although we have had some 10 pound striped bass caught from the shoreline in previous contests. Dress warm.  Check the weather report in case you need to bring rain gear. Bring a lunch basket.

The HRFA will provide a certain amount of fishing rods and reels. These can be borrowed form the HRFA FREE of any cost.  All children under 16 will receive a Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs card and an HRFA Youth Angler Program Sticker.

We provide this in an effort to open the eyes of the public to the recreational activities that can be enjoyed by a healthy Hudson River.  This is a wonderful resource at your back door.  We think it's worth protecting.  We think you will enjoy using it.

All groups and vendors agree that this is an absolutely gorgeous place to have this event.  The Palisades Cliffs, with hawks and falcons circling overhead made a perfect backdrop for the afternoon.
