Just got home from wading in the bay,no hundred fish caught today like the "Fishing Mission". Six poor man's Tarpon ,three blow fish and one 29 inch Trout. Released. All caught on a home made jig.( The wading is in my short's and sneaker's guy's .) There's always something running down here in Sarasota ,Florida.   I'd like to wish everyone back there a Happy holiday and I still miss the old  Hudson and the club.

11/9/06 Just One More Stripers & Blues
HELLO, striped bass fishing continues to do well and please the anglers. Below, you can see action shots of the Scott Lavenberg charter on Thursday afternoon. Scott took out his two sons on a beautiful day. You can see me in a " T " shirt in one of the pictures. What great weather. We had a full limit of stripers eeling in the channels. The bass were up to 36" and Scott and the boys released most. Only keeping two for the dinner table. We were getting one bass on every drift with the final drift producing a double header. Bluefish are still in abundance and they are hitting the eels and we are casting to them on the surface. Water temp. ,yesterday in the bay, off the tip of Sandy Hook was 54.2 degrees.
10/27/06 Seabass & Stripers The 3J's
Chas :  I was out on Friday 10/27/06 with Gan on his boat we fished past the V.Z. caught a handful of keeper sea bass, had to weed through a lot of small fish seems like once the tide starts to move the bigger fish hit. After it slowed down we decided to go over by our secret spotJ. We started catching stripers right away in about an hour and a half we had about 40 bass from 24 to 28 inches all fat fish. It was starting to get late so we left the fish biting and headed homeL Friday was the calm before the storm considering you had four days of wind before and probably another four days of wind after. I guess you have to take advantage of the nicer days not too many of them. Looks like the bass are starting to school up and putting on the feed.  Joe The3J’S.

10/19/06 Allen Riley NJ Surf Stripers!
Thought you or some of your associates would like to know that the surf is alive with stripers at Sandy Hook. Actually, the action turned on the day after my HRFA presentation.

I've been catching stripers in the overnight hours steady on swimming plugs when conditions are right. Guys dunking clams are also doing well.

Attached are two photos of a nice striper I landed this morning.

Best regards,
Allen

10/10/2006 First Cast Charters Steve Byrne Stripers
Fall jigging has been slow so far. It is still early though, so I'm not too concerned. I received a few good reports from friends who have been clamming bass, so I gave it a shot this morning (10/10). I had a dozen bass in the boat, 3 over 40 inches. I kept one 25-pounder & released the rest, which were generally around 30 inches. Also had three fish spit the bit - two of them were large. Nearly got spooled three times, resulting in a case of thumb-burn. Man that felt good!
This fishing should be fairly reliable, and I will go at them this way until they start hitting the jigs. Time of day is less important than tide - we just need moving water. Let me know if you want to get on them.
Capt. Steve Byrne

10/6/2006  Just one more weakfish
The featured charter of the week is the Mike Kochen party. We went weakfishing and had a pretty good day. We landed weakfish up to 20 " and many smaller ones, keeping 20 fish. We also threw back plenty of "spikes", about 12" fish which I guess bodes well for the future. They were hitting   sandworms in the Reach channel. The water temp. was still high at about 66.2 degrees. This three day stretch of bad weather will probably push out the weakfish but start the bass biting.

I was out with my son this morning, and we decided to concentrate on stripers. We hit all of the local rock piles and jetties, and worked around some of the schools of peanut bunker along the south side of Staten Island. Our final tally was 17 stripers, with the five biggest between 22 and 24 inches. All on light tackle with half-ounce jigs.
We did give in to temptation at one point - just long enough to catch six bluefish.

blues from 2-4 lbs.ripping thru small bait, no bass.

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006 Weakfish  George Dalcero
Four of us left the dock at Rumson, down the river and headed straight for Buoy 12 along The Reach.
When we arrived at 10am, there was already a fleet ... 3 party boats and about 20 smaller craft down to a 12 footer with 4 guys in it, spread out over a half mile area. We baited up our light tackle with Sandworms and bounced some 2, and 3 ounce sinkers to see what would hold ... the 3's did it for us.
We didn't see anybody bringing anything much in and instead we watched the show of two Coast Guard choppers doing rescue drills with divers in the water ..... great show!
When the tide started going out ... sometime after noon ... the action got hot ... everybody was bringing them in!!  There was one smaller boat with 2 aboard that had continual action for at least 2 hours and we didn't see them throw ANYTHING back!
We boated approximately 30 weaks ... and had many keepers. The best of them (5) were over 25 inches and up to 7 lbs!!  One nice bulgeheaded Porgy close to 2 1/2 lbs. was caught by me also.
Heading home we spotted the birds diving and screaming just east of the Navy pier and we nailed a bunch of blues in the 3 - 5 lb. range ... many in the school were jumping a foot out of the water right next to the boat.  All blues were released.
Weather was great ... but, late in the day, we spied heavy storm clouds headed east out over the bay ... which veered over Staten Island and to the north. One especially dark looking storm cloud headed towards Coney Island that had a long tail at the end of it that veered straight down toward the ground.  I mentioned to the guys that it looked like it could become a tornado.
Then we headed on home and thought no more about it ... until the news reports last night and today which mentioned that a huge water spout had hit Long Island Sound and had winds of approximately 70MPH!!!  I'm so glad it went where it did and not in our direction ...
I'm sure it was the cloud I spotted earlier...........!
It was a great day of fishing!

lots of bait in the water, all the bass were small,20- 24 inches.

9/18/06 Checked out Ocean Breeze pier yesterday morning. Nice sunrise over Hoffman. Stripers and Blues were not there. Caught plenty of snappers, pilot fish and porgies 7 to 10 inches. It's 10 and a half inch limit over there, so it was all catch and release. Had a great time anyway, great little pier they have there. Witnessed 2 out of season fluke caught by other anglers. Well worth the trip.

SURF FISHING AT LONG BEACH ISLAND. 1ST TIME OUT THERE.

9/17/06 Just one More!-Monster bluefish were landed Sunday by the Jeff and Linda Seip charter. The ocean was a little nasty at 17 Fathoms with a large east swell still coming in and wind about 15 mph out of the north, but the blues were there. They ran from a low of 4 lbs. to a high of 15 lbs. With most being Slammers!  The water temp. was still 70.6 degrees out there and in the bay. They were happy bringing all those fillets back to PA. We did not see any false albies or bonito even though we were chumming for them. Monday had the Ray and George Rogers charter aboard for great weakfish action. A near limit was landed in the bay with multiple fish measuring 25". Fluke, bluefish and croakers were also landed. The bay was jam packed with peanut bunker. There were large schools everywhere. We tried a few drifts in the rip before going weakfishing for stripers with the out going tide but had no luck. We did see a few landed, but the water is still too warm for consistant action. It should break wide open in October!!

Went out Sunday afternoon with Bill, Silas and George for weakies. The guys wanted weakfish, and while I warned them that it has been tough fishing, they were determined to give it a serious try. We started near Seguine Ave. in the Reach Channel and marked fish, but the tide was weak and the fish were inactive. For the first hour and a half, we made several more stops, all with the same result. At that point, I suggested we try under the birds that were working off Keansburg. Sometimes we catch weakfish under the blues, but yesterday was not one of those times. We spent the next few hours catching tailor blues on jigs, poppers, swimmers, and peanut bunker. When the sun was getting low, we headed back to the Reach and gave the weakfish another try. First stop was the 9 can, where I read fish. We had three weaks on the first drift, and I thought it was going to be our turn to bail them. The following drifts only yielded a few more, and we called it a day. Totals for the trip were approximately 30 bluefish and a half-dozen weakfish. Great sunset, lots of action & plenty of laughs.

Don had an 18lb bass and Ray had an 11lb blue

9/3/06 East River Bass & Blues  Chas Stamm
Fished with Joe Curvino again today to find that even after the storm, the East River was calm and smooth and still producing nice numbers of striped bass and bluefish.  The fish ere easy to find with the birds working over many areas of the river.  Even crowded situations with a number of boats still produced many bass and blues.  Fish seem to be getting a little larger now as well.  Several bass in the 15 pound range and the blues were again a little bigger topping out at around 9 or 10 pounds. Fished just the outgoing tide today.  Chas  <'////><

9/1/2006 Just One More! WOW!!   We survived the storm!!  With no damage to the "Just One More". The wind blew over the weekend, sustained at over 40 mph for 19 hours!   Towards the end of the storm, Saturday afternoon and early evening it was blowing close to 60 mph.!  Winds were clocked at Sea Tow, just a little ways up the river from me at 57 mph. The floating docks in my marina were going up and down 5-6' constantly and when you thought it was safe to walk on them or you thought you had it down pat, they jerked violently from side to side. The hugh waves were coming in the opening of the marina, hitting the sea wall by the trailer park and going over the top into the last 4 trailers on the end. My marina manager with help from me and others went through 64  5/8" ropes from all the ropes popping!  But even more impressive, we went through 20 new dock cleats!!  Re-bolted down during the storm. They were being pulled out one after the other. They ran out of cleats and had to go buy more during the storm and borrow others from other marinas. We were one of the very few marinas that did not lose a boat due to the constant attention paid by the few that were there. We did have to pump out one boat with a large gas operated pump, but were able to save it. !t is very amazing how no one cares about their boats!!  Even after being phoned to come down and put on extra ropes, etc., that the storm was bad, and their lines were not strong enough, no one showed up till Sunday!!  The wing nut next to me in the sail boat was called multiple times to come down. He was there before the storm and put on two 1/4' spring lines!!  I personally, with the help of the marina manager, tied up his boat 3 different times the first night because of his lines breaking. Then his boat  was attended to at least 4 more times during the storm with broken lines. If we did not do that, his sail boat would have been on top of my boat  in an instant. So Sunday, the sun is out and it is mirror calm, he comes diddly-bopping down the dock after the storm with his sailing buddies for a nice cruise. And do you know what he says???  "See Rich, I didn't have to come down, it didn't sink, the storm couldn't have been that bad" !!!  I'm still scratching my head and trying to find some new swear words. I used them all up.
8/25/06 Nick Antanies   Hey Charlie,
Its been a while since I emailed you a report, I've been extremly busy.  Well 2 weeks ago I was down in Maryland offshore and we had 10 yellow fin, 4 mahi, and white marlin.  I was out Fluking in LBI on Friday Aug 25th and we had 12 keepers, 1 5lb weakfish.  Headed out Fluking again on Saturday not as good as the day before, but still had 5 keepers.  Played Hookey from work on Monday and headed to the Hook with Teddy K and had a bunch of monster blues and 2 keeper fluke with one being over 6lbs...  All in all a great few days of fishing!  Hope all is well with you
Thanks,
Nick A

8/26/06  Chas Stamm & Joe Curvino East River Bass & Blues
Had another steady day of striped bass and bluefish in the East River today fishing with Joe Curvino.  Bucktails on the bottom had doubles and triples on every drift.  No large fish yet but plenty of them.  Most fish were in the 5 to 8 pound range. Got boarded by the Coast Guard and oddly enough they were very polite!   Not the "Authoritarian" type of guys we are used to seeing out there, but just wanted to see our driver's licenses and the fact that we had life jackets for everyone aboard. All & all a great day on the water as rains kept most of the pleasure boaters home!

8/19/06 Freddie the J North Hudson
Fished the mouth of the Normanskill during high tide on Saturday, August 19.  75
degrees, water fairly clear.  Got a few small white perch which I used for
bait, one good hit but whatever it was got off.  One of the baitfish died and
was laying on the bottom in about 5 feet of water.  Pole started twitching so I
reeled in.  To my suprise it was a crab with an overall diameter of about 6-8
inches including the legs.  Of course he let go before I could boat him, and he
was belly up so I couldn't see if it was a blue crab, but what else could it
have been?  FYI, the Normanskill is about 140 miles north of NYC.  Some trek
for  a crab!

8/19/06 Just one more Shrewsxbury Rocks
Saturday, we had the famous Bluefish Bob Donahue charter back on the boat. Fishing for what?? Bluefish of coarse!!   We steamed out to the Mud Buoy for the bluefish massacre. When we got there, the water was dirty and there was a very large algea bloom. To make matters worse, there was absolutely no tide !! The chum and the baits were going straight down! Where was the current?? So Capt. Rich sprang into action. We picked up everything quickly and steamed out to 17 Fathoms. The water looked cleaner in 115' of water but the same thing happened. No movement at all. Again no tide or current. Low tide was not for another 3 hours. What was happening?? My buddies fluke fishing back in the bay said the drift was way to fast. 3 knots !!  So back into action sprang the Capt.  Picking everything up again and steaming all the way into the Shrewsbury Rocks. In only 30' of water I read a lot of bait. We set up, and the current was at least moving a little here!!  THEN............. the blitz started. Non stop action till the end of the day. Rods were bent with large blues and we had many double headers. They ranged between 8 and 12 lbs. !!  The Rocks saved the day. Water temp. was 73.2 degrees. In all the dirty, non moving water, there was no sign of Bonito or Albies.
8/15/06 Bill Greene Shore fishing - picked off a 7 lb-ish carp, 2 channel cats, an eel, and a
golden shiner with corn kernels, bread and dough. All on the small side, but with
the vast numbers of crabs which seem to be present this year, it was all you
could do to keep the bait on the hook. When the crabs take off, size and
numbers can vastly improve. - Bill Greene

8/11/06 Just One More Charters Raritan Bay
Hello, on Wednesday, the Marty Golabek party decided to do a weakfish exploratory trip. I did some searching for marks on the recorder for only about 5 minutes. We went to one of the spots I know the weakies usually show up early. We started fishing and only after about 2 minutes of fishing we had a double header weakfish ! They we both 22" long ! Man, we had the spot and were all alone and were going to limit out! The only problem was those were the only weakfish caught for the rest of the day !! We had great markings and hugh bait clouds, but I guess the weakies are not ready yet. I did see one more weakfish that followed a jig to the boat that I was jigging when I reeled in. We did land some bluefish also. Maybe they'll be in and ready in another week or two. Fluke fishing is still producing tons of shorts , with plenty of action with keepers ranging from 4 to 12 fish per trip. There are monster bluefish offshore for those who want to go chumming as well as reports of bonito and false albies. Time to catch some hard fighters.   HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON. 908-472-2684.   www.just1morecharters.com
8/6/06  Chas Stamm Joe Curvino East River Bass
Fished again in the East River today with Gretchen (don't know her last name). Another good day with striped bass and bluefish on just about every drift.   Some doubles and a few triples.  Again most fish came off the bottom.  If we did not have our baits touching the bottom, we got no fish.  Put your bait on the bottom...wham!  Fish.  Blues to 7 pounds and bass up to around 12 pounds.   Again...no bait needed.  Chas <'////><

8/5/06 Chas Stamm & Joe Curvino Bass & Blues East River NYC
Fished with Joe Curvino on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised with some bass and blues in just about every location we tried. Most fish were on the bottom but we did have some topwater blues that were entertaining.  The blues were all around the 5 to 6 pound range.  The striped bass we mostly between 7 and 10 pounds but we got one that was pushing 40 inches.  I guessed it was about 20 pounds.  A good day for us.  All on bucktails...no bait.   Chas  <'////><

8/5/06 Freddie the J R.I. Fluke
Traveled from Albany to the Point Judith RI area last week, brought the boat,
14' Starcraft.  Very hot, water temperature beautiful, mid to upper 70's.
Caught many fluke using killies and flukebellies, including 7 keepers over 17.5
inches.  One was 21 inches, nice filets!.  Ratio of shorts to keepers was about
3 to 1.  Good clams too!

8/3/06 Just One More Raritan Bay Fluke
Featured trip of the week:  yesterday, we had aboard the Peter McIntosh charter. What a day of fluke fishing !! We fished in 20- 35'  of water for a banner catch. We actually had over 100 fluke caught on the boat. Constant action for everyone on board especially for the Captain. It was one fish after another with 4 fish on at the same time often. We also landed 8 keeper fluke as well as bluefish and sea bass. This Capt. never runs out of bait, but yesterday came close. We had two packages of spearing, two packages of squid strips and a pint of killies. To keep things going I had to cut the squid strips in half and then had to flag down a fellow charter capt. that was heading in to borrow some of his bait!!  When i said constant action, i meant it !!  What a day of fishing in the heat. AND THEY SAY THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH FLUKE AROUND AND WANT TO SEVERELY LIMIT OUR QUOTA NEXT SEASON! THOSE EXPERTS HAD BETTER CHECK THEIR NUMBERS. WHERE DO THEY GET THEIR NUMBER COUNTS ANYWAY ??? I HAVE BEEN CHARTERING FULL TIME FOR 8 YEARS AND WAS NEVER ASKED ONE QUESTION ABOUT MY FLUKE CATCHES!!!!  I'M STILL SCRATCHING MY HEAD. From the 1 can at the tip of Sandy Hook to the mouth of the Shrewsbury River the water temp. averaged 83.3 degrees in the bay with a high of 84.7 degrees !!!  And believe it or not, the bunker schools were everywhere !
7/28/06 Just One More  Raritan Bay Fluke
HELLO, fluke fishing has really been improving. We had been catching a lot more short fluke than keepers. The ratio had been 10, 20, to even 25 to one shorts to keepers. But the Tom Fisher charter changed all that yeaterday ! The ratio flipped the other way. They landed over a dozen keeper fluke with only a handfull of shorts. The smallest fluke kept was 17" and the high was a  7 LB. wopper. Many of the keepers were around 19-20 inches which made for great fillets. We basically fished off the beach in 30' of water. And the water temp. was hovering around 75.2 degrees. They had a banner day. THANKS TOM !

HERE'S THE FEATURED CHARTER OF THE WEEK. ED BELL AND HIS GROUP FROM ED BELL LANDSCAPING ,TOTALING 4 ANGLERS BOOKED THE 'JUST ONE MORE' TO GO BLUEFISHING THIS LAST TUESDAY. REMEMBER TUESDAY, THE SUPER HOT DAY?? WELL, WE WENT BLUEFISHING!  I HAD HEARD OF THE DOGFISH NIGHTMARE IN ANY DEPTH OF WATER OVER 50' SO WE WENT DOWN THE BEACH. WE SLAMMED THE LARGE CHOPPERS. FISH WERE ALL BETWEEN 4 AND 10 LBS. !  WE HAD MANY DOUBLES ON DURING THE DAY. BECAUSE OF THE EXCESSIVE HEAT, WHICH WENT UP TO 105 DEGREES UNDER MY ROOF, IN THE SHADE WITH ALL THE WINDOWS OPEN AND BACK ROLLED UP, ED TOLD ME TO START HEADING IN EARLY. BUT..... AFTER 'JUST ONE MORE'. THE NEXT FISH ED LANDED WAS A 36" STRIPED BASS !! IT WAS CAUGHT ON A BLUEFISH HOOK WITH WIRE LEADER, DRIFTED OUT LIKE BLUEFISHING AND ON FROZEN BUNKER CHUNKS!! THE VERY NEXT FISH CAUGHT BY ONE OF THE CREW WAS A 38" STRIPED BASS!! ALL OF THIS HAPPENING IN 105 DEGREE HEAT AND 76.3 DEGREE WATER TEMP. !! ED TOLD ME TO FORGET GOING IN EARLY AFTER THAT. WE WENT IN WITH A FULL COOLER OF BLUES AND BASS WITH MANY FISH RELEASED. THE RIDE IN SURE FELT GOOD WITH A FULL COOLER OF FISH AND THE AC COMING THROUGHT THE WINDOWS.
7/18/2006 Knot Easy Charters Fluke
Chas,
I went out Sunday on the Knot Easy charter I won at one of the HRFA meeting. The fluking was slow, we only put 2 and a blue in the box. However the trip was GREAT. Hats off to Capt. Matt Kane for a job well done. We fished mostly the ocean side of the hook, with shorts and/or skates on each drift. From the chatter on the radio, most fisherman were doing the same. I got to use up my ALS tags.
Capt. Matt was most accommodating, and very attentive to all onboard. I assured him, his donation was very much appreciated by all HRFA members. I informed him of all the good work   you guys & gals do with the monies raised.
All in all it was a great day out on the water.
Thanks again for all you do.
Wishing you smooth seas full of fish!

Tom Guyre

HELLO TO ALL MY FISHING FRIENDS OUT THERE. I HOPE YOU ARE KEEPING COOL IN THIS HEAT WAVE. WE HAVE BEEN MAINLY FLUKE FISHING ALL THIS MONTH. THE RATIO FROM SHORTS TO KEEPERS HAS BEEN ANYWHERE FROM 10-1 TO 25-1. BUT NICE FLUKE HAVE BEEN LANDED. 8.5 LBS., 6 LBS. AND IT SEEMS ON EVERY TRIP FISH ARE UP TO 21-22" LONG. 7/9/06 NY Harbor Fluke Alex Mamet
I would like to post the report with your help.
Date: Sunday 07/09/2006  Location: New York Harbor
Bait: Squid strip and frozen Spearing   Water temperature: 68
fished with my friend Vladimir and his 10 year old grand son Alexander.    Alexander won the pool with 25" fluke. It was a great day to be on the water

Sunday, July 9, 2006.  Freddie the J  White perch
Fished the Hudson under the Castleton bridge from 9 to 12 noon.  Tide nearly all
the way out, weather sunny and warm, little wind.  Got some small white perch
on worms, used those to catch about 6 or 8 channels, and 1 or 2 giant
bullheads.  Biggest channel was 21 inches, probably five pounds.
Freddie the J

7/7/06 Bill Greene Catfish Beacon
Caught & released 6 channel cats - ranging from 8" to the biggest - 24-1/2"
at 4 lbs. even - on Friday 7/7 fishing from shore in the Hudson below Beacon.
Dropped a couple of others - lightly hooked. Actually going for carp with corn
kernels, bread and dough, but the channels went for the carp bait and took
over. Heavy rainfalls must have pushed the salt-line well down river, so you
could anticipate the channel cats would push down into the fresher water - and
they did. - Bill Greene

Hey Chas,
We headed out to the canyon's on Friday night in search of some tuna!  We had 1 long fin and 3 yellow fin tuna.  I needed a day to relax after that killer ride, so I went to the beach on Sunday and saw something I've never seen in all the years I've been down the shore.  I saw a Whale about 150 yards off shore jumping like crazy, what a great site!!  Anyway I did some fluking at the tires off of barnaget on Tuesday, but the water was still a little cold, we had 1 nice seabass and 1 keeper fluke and a million dogfish and sand sharks!!  I'll be fluking inshore this weekend!

7/2/06  Chas Stamm, Joe Curvino and Bob Hussy  Striped bass East River NYC
Went fishing with Joe and Bob Hussy this morning to a slow pick of striped bass and blues.  Blues were in the 5 to 6 pound range.  (Just a guess as we throw all the fish back anyway) Joe lost a large fish and brought in a couple small bass and blues. Bob got a nice 15 pound bass and lost a few small blues.  I lost a good number of both. Much slower than the previous weeks.

6/29/06 Just one more Raritan Bay
THE FLUKE ARE IN AND LARGE NUMBERS OF KEEPERS ARE BEING CAUGHT!! THE LAST TWO DAYS SAW HEAVY SOUTH WINDS AND SEAS. WE REALLY COULDN'T FISH ON THE OUTSIDE FOR STRIPERS THOUGH WE TRIED MONDAY MORNING. IT WAS BASICALLY UNFISHABLE CONDITIONS. SO WE OPTED TO GO FLUKING IN THE BAY AND WHAT A GOOD DECISION. THE JOHN ZIETZINGER CHARTER FISHED TWO DAYS ABOARD THE 'JUST ONE MORE'.  MONDAY AND TUESDAY. AFTER TRYING TO BASS FISH MONDAY MORNING, WE WENT INTO THE BAY AND DID VERY WELL ON THE FLUKE. THEY LANDED AN  8.5 LB. FLUKE WITHIN THE FIST HALF HOUR OF FLUKING. AND ALL THE OTHER FLUKE WERE BETWEEN 18" AND 21".  ON TUESDAY WE TARGETED THE FLATTIES AGAIN AND HAD A SUPER TRIP. THEY BOXED 20 KEEPER FLUKE TO A HIGH OF 21". PLENTY OF FLUKE JUST MISSED THE MARK AT ABOUT A 1/4" SHORT. WE CAUGHT ABOUT 60 FLUKE YESTERDAY. PLENTY OF ACTION.  SO THE FLUKE FISHING IS REALLY HEATING UP. OPEN DAYS LEFT IN JULY FOR THE FLUKE SPECIAL ARE: 5,8,10,23,24,25,31. Took my kid crabbing on 25 June at North Dock, West Point.  In two hours we caught two small (5”) blue crabs.  Lots of dead fish on the bank, mostly small white perch but some catfish and a giant striper.  No idea what killed them.  I expect more crabs to be here in a  week or two.

We were on our annual Ontario Trip for Walleye, but the Captain says that the water is too cold so we tried Brown Trout.  This proved to be the right choice as within minutes of setting the planer boards a familiar cry was heard  "FISH ON"   after that it was just steady not furious, but you have to consider the weather which was not blue skies and warm. Thank Heaven for rain gear
We "limited out" on Saturday and Sunday.  I was never so glad to be so tired.

Fished last night for a few hours and had an unbelievable bite that included a few really big fish. Had 4 bass over 42 inches (2@44'', a 43'' and a 42'') At one point we had a double header with a 44 and a 43 inch. the rest of the fish ranged from low 30''s to 38'' - All fish were released alive. Some of the big fish appeared to still have eggs and some appeared to be spawned out. Fished with Randy Lee and his friend Robert.

5/31/06 Fred Rung Raritan Striped Bass
Chas,
Played Hooky on 5/31/2006 and went fishing with my cousins from upstate NY.  Had to show them what good striper fishing is like.
We set up north of the 18 buoy in Raritan Reach around high tide and chummed with clams and bunker.  We got a few stripers and blues before the wind against the tide situation made things difficult.  We had 4 rods in the water and at one point had 5 fish on at the same time.  (Some wise guy was using a double rig.)
While the wind and tide were fighting it out in opposite directions we took a boat ride over to where the birds were working last week.  It was foggy by the narrows and that made it impossible to see anything so we wound up back where we started in the reach and as the tide turned around we started catching again.
Caught lots of fish, threw many back and had a good day.  Biggest striper was close to 40 inches and the biggest blue was around 12 pounds.  If anybody is thinking of traveling for 3 or 4 hours to try the stripers up river think again.  These guys live up there and agree that for the past 3 years the best striper fishing has been right here.

May 25, 2006 HRFA Fishing trip on the Atlantis Princess
The May 25th fishing trip by Kittatinny Regional High School trip on the Atlantis Princess was a great success.   39 students and 12 faculty members went on the trip sponsored by the Hudson River Fishermen's Association and caught well over 100 fish.  ( Actually it was probably around 200 but there were too many to count.)  75 bluefish were released with ALS tags before the HRFA Youth Angler Program ran out of tags for the day.  From that point we had to practice tag and release without the tags.  There were at least another 75 The largest 3 fish were all striped bass of 39, 36 and 34 inches.  Those fish weighed 23, 19 and 18 pounds.  That 39 inch 23 pound fish is a new HRFA Youth Angler Program record!
The fish were all caught by following the working birds around Raritan Bay.  As soon as the action slowed down the captain would move up to the school of fish and the students would have a blast using either bunker or diamond jigs.  Many students caught between 10 and 20 fish.  All in all it was a great day on the water.
The HRFA volunteers included Capt. Glenn R. Blank, Tony Evangelista, Mike Cargill, Wayne Geider and Bob Kaczorowski.  The Atlantis Princess was run by Captain Mike Romero and his mates Buddy and Bill.  Thanks to all of these people and the HRFA for making this trip special for so many people.
The HRFA Youth Angler Program made a great impression on a lot of new anglers.
This is a great program and Kittatinny will be back for more.

5/25/06 Chasbo Banerman's Island
For all those of little faith. Those that were saying that the fish have passed by, and it is over, WRONG!!!!!
I have not been sending any reports from up here in Newburgh this year because there wasn't much to report, but there is now.
Yesterday, my fishing mate Ed, and I went out and had what we have to say is the best day Striper fishing yet. It was a "Banner Day, at Banner man's Island." The photos tell it all. Know that the pictures you see are but an example of about 20 fish caught between the two of us all within five pounds of these. Some bigger, some smaller. This is not counting the shorts that were five to ten pounds.
So, even though the Cottonwood is on the water, it isn't over by any means, it has just begun, for the Cow Herd's arrival
We used six eels, and three dozen bloodworms. Trowler's were doing OK also, but I would bring live bait, if you want some intense activity
See you all around Manhattan soon, once it goes flat up here.
ChasBo

5/9/06 Freddir the J.  Albany
Fished the downtown Albany area Tuesday evening, May 9, from 6 to 9 pm.  Cloudy,
calm, tide about halfway out.  Got 3 nice shad on sabiki rigs behind the UHaul
building where the underground stream comes in, two were about 24 inches, quite
a fight on 6 pound test.  No herring at that location so moved up to the I-90
bridge, got some on a drift under the bridge.  Anchored up right below the
bridge, got another shad but no stripers.  Try the Troy dam again this weekend,
hope it doesn't rain too much and muddy up the water.  Maybe try some plugs and
jigs in the white water.

Then ran into a whole cloud of them, blacked out portions of the fish finder,
couldnt' keep them off the hook.  Also had a bullhead take my herring rig,
nearly pulled the pole overboard.  No bass, but saw one guy with one.  Try

I had a charter booked for 3 anglers today, but I called them & cancelled yesterday evening. The forecast called for east winds 15 to 20, with gusts to 25. Not exactly comfortable conditions. I headed out alone, and found the bluefish hungrier than ever. They were on the bait the minute it hit the water, and I caught around 20. I also managed to put two 34-inch stripers in the boat.

4/29/06 Capt. Steve Byrne Blues! & Bass!
Had an afternoon trip today with Bill and Silas. We had a decent trip, with periods of fast action seperated by some lulls. We were hoping for stripers, but the bluefish kept getting to the bait first. Silas caught a fat 33-inch bass, and we saw a larger bass try to steal the bait from a big bluefish that Bill was fighting - it was an awesome sight!

The bluefish were big, aggressive and kept us busy, with about 15 making it into the boat, and a bunch that bit through the leader before we got to see them.

Wind was southeast, and became heavy around 5:30.

4/29/06 Bill Greene Carp  Beacon NY
Caught and released 5 carp in the 4 to 11 lb. area fishing the Hudson shore.
Used corn kernels, bread and dough combination. High tide about 12:45. Caught
first fish at 9:30, next three between 2:15 and 3:00, and a final one at 4:00.
It pays off in both fish production and enjoyment to plan a longer session -
if I'd quit at about the 5-hour mark, I'd have only had one fish. -

4/27/06 Steve Byrne Great Kills Bass
Fished this morning with Mitro & Henry for a 20-pound striper (Henry), and about 20 bluefish. We spent about two hours with barely any current. The fish were picky. We kept the bass & one bluefish.

Headed out this evening with Brian Walsh and his dad. The three of us combined for 25 bluefish, and two stripers including a 20-pounder for El Capitan. Lots of picky fish, missed bites & mystery run-offs. Beautiful sunset on the water & plenty of laughs. All fish released.

Both trips were just outside of Great Kills Harbor

4-8-06 Rich P  Hackensack River Stripers!
A little report on the Hacky, the schoolies are in and the bigger fish are on the way.  This past Saturday and Tuesday (8th and 11th) we hammered the schoolies by the dozen and on Tuesday we managed a few bigger fish over 24" including the 28" legal who was released following this picture.  The river temp was in the 55* area and the power plant was 10 to 20* warmer as the day went on.  All of our fish came on swim-baits and jig heads at various locations in Jersey City and Secaucus.  We got them on both tides.

4/11/2006  Ken sheldon Haverstraw Bay
Hi Chas, I was lucky enough to get a vacation day today, so I took my Dad, Ray and my uncle, Woody Stalter out for some fishing.  Overall the fish were not as big as the past few trips, but they were cooperative.
Warm, partly cloudy, very calm winds for most of trip.
Fished Haverstraw Bay area, started with incoming thru slack to outgoing tide.
Air temps started in high 30s ended up in high 60s.
Water temp was 45 to start, ended at 48 [surface temps]
We caught 40, quite a few schoolies, but biggest just a couple ounces shy of 7lbs [see photo of my Dad]
My uncle caught his biggest over 5lbs.
All caught on bloods and gulp worms.
Another great day to be out on the water fishing.

April 1 2006  Freddie the J Belieze
Fished from shore and boat off San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize, first week in
April, using live and cut bait.  Beautiful country, people very nice, no bugs,
no rain, weather in the 80's water temp 82.  Got two nice cobia one about 15
pounds, the other 20, a five pound spanish mackerel, five pound horse eyed
jack, and innumerable snapper, yellow tail and other small fish I couldn't
identify.  Snorkeled out on the reef, clouds of varied and colorful fish
numbering in the thousands, watched the guide feed and play with stingrays,
swam with nurse sharks, really quite unbelizeable.  Only saving grace about
coming home is that its striper season!

Guys,
went out for a joyride at lunchtime today.....wasnt fishing, but saw some real interesting stuff....a seven member pod of the common species of dolphin that was swimming around the western shore of Governor's Island.   i took still pictures and mini-movies with my digital camera....here are some of them for ya. Is this worth posting on the club webpage ?  its not really a fishing report....everyone knows that dolphin are not fish.

OK here are my fishing reports:
3-28-2006 Peirmont.  Hit the pier again with Christian Hoops, to use the left over worms from monday night. Had a late start due to chris being held up at work.  Still landed 1 striper and a bunch of perch in an hour!
Out again on Friday night 3-21-2006 with Bob (AKA circle Hook).  We hit the Hacky hard all day!!  4 other boats pulled up to the ramp on the way our and not one of them caught anything!  I had to perch and that was it for the day!
Saturday 4-1-2006 Peirmont again with Rich B and had 4 stripers with the biggest about 24-26 inches.  My father in-law had his first ever striper, so it was an exciting day!!  All on bloods!!
Thanks,   Nick A

Lost another one - same size or maybe better, about
3:30, when it got into rocks. Also went out for carp over
2 weeks ago (3/13), same spot (trying to catch the first
"heat wave")and a couple of carp crashed the surface,
even back then, but I got soaked in a shower and had to
quit after an hour. Carp definitely biting in Hudson.

3/30/2006  Ken Sheldon Haverstraw Stripers
I was lucky enough to have off again today and my brother Bob and son Matt went out fishing in the Haverstraw Bay area, Westchester side.  What a beautiful day. It was like a lake out there for most of the trip.  My brother has never caught a striper before.  Well he caught them today.  We caught 62 of them. [I know-another fisherman story-but it is true. We kept count since we wanted to see if we could beat the 40 we had the other day]
Biggest was only 6 lbs [we had a couple of them]  several 5 lbers and most in the 3-4 lb range.   We only had 4 what I would call "shorts."  We lost a few, but what fun.  Only negative part of the trip was my Dad couldn't make this trip.

All caught on bloods and gulp worm combos [well one was caught only on a gulp worm]
All let go to be caught again
Weather was warm, 60s, and sunny
Water temp 44-45
Virtually no wind, then a southern breeze
Fished incoming thru slack to start of outgoing.
We left because we ran out of bait.

Ken Sheldon

3/28/06 Ken Shelton Haverstraw Bay Striped Bass
Chas, I was lucky enough to have off from work today. My son Matt, my Dad Ray and I went out for about 5 hours of fishing in Haverstraw Bay.  Not alot of size, but we caught 40, most in the 3-4 lb size, and a couple of 5 lbers. My Dad caught the biggest. He turned 87 last week. He had a great time--we all had a great time. A good way to start the season.
All caught on bloods or on bloods with the new Gulp worm on the same hook.
Water 42 degrees
Air temp low 50s, light breeze, sun and cloud mix
Tide--outgoing
Enlcosed is a photo of my Dad.

We had a good night all in all!!  I had 4 stripers to 24 inches and a great catch and release story!   My fish got caught on a pilingabout 30-40 feet out and I couldn't get him in and I didn't want to break the line and let him die there!  So Christian Hooks threw his waders on and went out as far as he could and tried to free the fish!  Finally after a while of trying the fish was still caught and I told christian to just pull the line and it snapped!  But all of a sudden I started reeling in my line to Re-rig and the fish was still on!!  So christian revived him and saw him swim away!!

First and earliest I have ever had the boat in the water. Saturday, March 12, 2006; three of us boated 50+ stripers in the Nyack area. All were small 18 to 24 inch fish. Fished from 9:00 to 3:00 constant action until slack tide, all on blood worms 12 DOLLARS A DOZEN !!!!! it didn’t take long to go through 60 dollars worth. Could not get a bite on clams, there have to something else these fish will hit on. I can’t wait for the herring to arrive. Only a few catfish and perch.

2/2/06  Old Crow!  Joe Spelewski! Sarasota Fla    Charlie ,loved that video.Just wanted to tell any of the members heading for the west coast of Florida, especially Sarasota bay. The guides are complaining on how bad the bay is because of the Red tide this year. Some have switched to stalking sheep head in the bay as a result. They are loving it though and the sheep head are quite tasty.
Tell the Fishing Mission that there's no hundred catches ,but you can come close if you go night fishing for Snook .One should head farther South, towards Charlotte Harbor.
I'm still wading in  my section, in shorts I might add . There's a typhoon blowing in the Bay and I had a great time. One Snook released and two other great strikes and one Red fish for lunch. I don't listen to what the guides say all the time and just fish. The tem.is 79 degrees and I had a ball. The new" Rapala Twithin Rap is Excellent"  Had problems keeping my balance with the SE wind blowing from the Gulf and I could have used a float .

1/30/06 Mike Banahan San Diego! Fishing Sucks!
150 feet of water about 4 miles out of San Diego Harbor and within 50 yards of the Mexican line.  Choppers and a Coastie inflatable chased us back North.Grey whales on their migration run south.  The fishing was terrible so we took a detour out to whale watch on the way back to port.

Glass Lake, Rensselaer County, Saturday, January 28, 2006.

What with the warm weather have to time ice fishing trips with an eye on the
thermometer.  A few nights of low teens last week firmed up the ice, still only
about 8-10 inches thick.  Weather was sunny, in the 40's.  Using minnows and
tip ups got 4 nice bass, all returned.  A ten year old kid fishing near by got
a 16 inch rainbow jigging in about 12 feet of water.  Another guy had a fancy
fish finder, you could see the fish swim up to grab the lure.  Tried it, got
one bluegill.  Ice fishing tournment next Saturday is iffy, supposed to be warm
all week.  Got reservations for Belize first week in April, can't wait.

Fish was caught in total darkness. You can see a picture of the fish in the fishing report section.  Here is my first report of the New Year.  I was down Florida visiting family and I did some largemouth bass fishing.  I caught 262 fish in 10 days; my best day was 68 fish. Two hours in the morning and maybe two hours in late afternoon, all on rattletraps and top water plugs. I fished one evening in the dark for about ten minutes and landed a 10 lb largemouth, fish was 25 inches in length. I guess I made up for the lousy fall fishing, have a happy and a healthy new year. Joe The 3 J’s.

12/31/05 Fishin Mission Lower Harbor Bass!
Ofcourse I did! Fished the NY Harbor Areas. Landed 32 schoolie stripers. But dropped a lot more. All on the small side 15" --- 22" Tagged 10 of them. Winds were calm, but AM snow squalls were annoying. Was pretty cold out too! Air 29 -- 34 degrees. Water temps were up a few degrees from last week 40 -- 43 degrees. Only fished 1/2 a day.   Once again me and Howie Leeman were the only 2 lunatics out there. Tried to beat snowstorm, but it started just as I got to ramp. Me thinks the "Fat Lady" is now singging! Fingers are all split open from lipping fish! Attaching a pic of one of the schoolies Tagged and ready for release. Many Tight Lines to All, and a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hoped for kings, actually, but didn't catch any.  Had to get out on the water, took the teenagers out on Helen S for drift fishing.  Caught fish, got smelly, had fun.   Nothing large, slow picking.  Better than watching tv; better than most other things.

12/18/05 Fishin' Mission
Fished  Sunday 12/18/05  with one of my "sharpie" friends from Coney Island. We fished the NY Harbor.  We had a total of 81 yes Eighty One, schoolie stripers.  All small, tried for bigger fish, when that didn't produce we went back to the schoolies.   With water temps down to 38 -- 42 degrees, it looks like the FAT LADY is starting to sing!!!  Tight Lines and Happy Holidays to ALL!!!!!!
12/17/05 Glass Lake, Rensselaer County, New York. Ice Fishing!

Two nights of below zero last week and the subsequent ice storm on Friday built
about 4 inces of good ice.  Fished Saturday and Sunday using tip ups and
minnows.  Iced about 6 pickerel, two foot long largemouths and two nice perch.
Weather high 20's partly cloudy, light wind.  Kurts new 6' by 6' by 6' umbrella
style fold up ice shanty and propane heater worked great.
Happy solstice to all.
