For the year 2003

We had a great year.  Plenty of big bass and great sized weakfish here in the Harbor.  The big bluefish did not hang around very long. We saw plenty of smaller, cocktails, but not many of the bigger blues...in the 12 pound range.  Also had some big weakfish.  Many over ten pounds.  Not allot of them but the ones we caught were big.

How did you do?

11/2003 Piermont Pier Sturgeon John Franesconi

Dear Charlie:
On November 12, 2003 while fishing from th Piermont Pier for tomcod, I
hooked in to a sturgeon.  The fish weighed 9 lbs. and was 36" long.
Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.
Sincerely,
John Francesconi

12/8/03 Al White  Blackfish

Lou, Darren, Chris and myself fished aboard the Hyper Striped with Capt. Pete Wagner and Mate Jimmy out of Highland, NJ. The plan was to leave the dock at 6:30 AM and locate the schools of Striped Bass on the surface and cast jigs or plugs to them. We headed south from the end of Sandy Hook all the way to Monmouth Beach, but no signs of bass anywhere. So we went to our alternate which was to anchor up in about 75 ft. of water and try for some Blackfish. Wind was blowing to 20 mph out of the North air temp started at 26 degrees and warmed up to 36 degrees and the water temp was about 47 degrees. We had a continuos catch of 45 to 50 keeper Blackfish up to 9 1/2 lb. We had a great day and I know some great eating for the next couple of weeks.

12/4/03 Ted Sheola  Sandy Hook

Fished a calm surf at Sandy Hook late Thursday afternoon (12/4) under cloudy
skies, light West winds (5-10 knots), water about 48 degrees.  Chased after
fast-moving pods of bass  and finally got into them at the main bathing beach.
Using shad lures and swimming plugs with teasers, caught and released more than
16 stripers to 24.5 inches. The bass blitzed the beach, pursuing hapless
peanut bunker right into the wash, from about 3:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on the
incoming.  Although not as big as some caught earlier, they were a lot of fun. The
feisty bass appeared to be very well fed and fought well.

Tight lines!
Ted Sheola

12/04/03 George Sendecki  Blackfish

What a great day on the ATLANTIC STAR out of the Atlantic Highlands. Captain TOM BUBAN and Mate RICH worked very hard to make sure everyone on board went home with BLACKFISH. I cannot tell you how many times we moved. These guys really worked in this cold. The thermometer in my car read 24 degrees when I got to the boat. It was clear, cold with a light west wind. When Rich set the anchor the sun was out. It warmed up nicely. Some of the people caught 5 or 6 keepers others like yours truly caught one keeper. I could not believe how many fish were caught that were 13 & 13 “

I think the government put the 14” limit because they know most of the fish are 13”. How many ” short SEA BASS, FLUKE did you catch this year.

Sorry to go off. Bad subject.

Some ling were caught as well as 1 nice seabass that had to be put back (season closed) as well as Dogfish.

CARL H. PALESTRINI of Aberdeen NJ took the pool with a nice 6 pound BLACKFISH.

Way to go Carl.

Thanks to CAPTAIN TOM and MATE RICH for another great trip. We were the last boat back to the dock.

11/24/03 Al White Niagra River Steelhead!

We fished the Niagara River, Lake Ontario side from Lewiston, NY on Monday, November 23. We hoped to catch some Steelhead, Lakers and maybe Muskies. We met Captain Chris at the launch ramp and first headed north along the NY side fishing a number of spots with no results. He then ran up river past the United States and Canadian power generator plants to the Devils Hole. A section 3 miles below the falls and 1/2 mile above the generators we were using egg sacks either chartreuse or pink on the smallest hook I ever used, off a three way with a 2 oz pencil sinker. The Steelhead were stacked along the edges of the hole and on the first drift we caught the first of 16 or 17 Steelheads with the largest being close to 15 lb. The weather started to change as a front started to moved through the area. We started to move back down river so we were closer to the launch ramp. Chris said he new there were some Lakers in the area so we made a couple of drifts and caught 3 or 4 Lakers to 15 lbs. We had planes to fish on Tuesday but the wind blew all night with gust up to 45 mph and that turned the river muddy brown so we had to cancel. All of the stories I've heard about the Niagara seem to be true. I am looking forward to fishing it again next year.

11/11/03 George Sendecki  Porgies and Seabass

I was fortunate to fish on the ATLANTIC STAR today 11-11-03. This is a day trip.

It leaves the dock at Atlantic Highlands at 7:30 AM and returns around 2:30.

Today we came back late. We had to move for a mud barge to drop its load and Capt. TOM did not want us to loose fishing time. (The barge made every boat move and never did drop it load of mud. Just went back towards Sandy Hook.)

Capt. TOM BUBAN and Mate RICH ran the boat.

The morning was cool with some sun. Then it became mostly cloudy and cooler.

I would guess upper 40’s. A hooded jacket and sweater was fine.

Green Crabs and Clams were supplied for bait. Most of the folks did not want to use the Crabs when they saw the Porgies and Seabass coming over the side in such nice numbers.

The feeling of many was why spend the time to catch one legal Blackfish when you could go home with more food.

Today TOM & RICH worked harder than normal to keep us on KEEPER fish.

We moved several times in the area of the Mud Buoy.

 All the folks caught fish.

There were many more Porgies than Seabass caught.

CHARLIE TOTH of Port Monmouth NJ won the pool with a nice Seabass.

BLACKFISH limit goes up to 8 fish per person on Saturday the 15th of November.

Capt. TOM said he would be spending more time looking for them then.

spot - shore-trail area beginning at what they call Croton Landing - north of

his Hudson River book. Very easy fishing - 35 to 40 foot lob cast - this area
has 4 to 5 feet of water even at dead low. Chum with some canned corn kernels
and bread (squeezed around a small rock so it gets to the bottom and stays
there while slowly breaking up - add to it occasionally),  and fish corn kernels

Went out fisihing with my mom and dad and the wonderful Chas Stamm. Even under windy conditions we were able to catch two fish. My father, R. John caught a beautiful striper and myself my largest stiper of my life that weighed in approximately 23.5 pounds and was 40 inches in length. In the past month I have broken my record on stripers three times and have to thank Chas Stamm for all his coaching and expertise. I have fished the river for years and have never been so sucessful as the past month. Thank you Chas.
My parents were amazed how the East River has cleaned up and what large fish come out of it. I have to make a note that Al White was nice enough to come by my boat when I was catching the big one and cheered me on with his buddy. The HRFA is a great group and I recommend to anyone that is not a member to join right away if you ever want to catch fish and learn about the wonderful fishery that is available so close by.  Roger Muller Jr.

10/16/03 Barry & Dan Davis Striped Bass

Hi Charlie!

Wanted to send in a fishing report about the beautiful day on the water I had with my brother, Danny Davis along with Dan Riemann from The Outdoorsman, last Thursday.  My brother Danny turned out to be high hook with the attached picture of the 36 " striped bass, caught on the incoming tide in the East River, that morning.   We all saw some bass or blue fish action that morning with fish up to 16 lbs., fishing rubber worms & sand worms or live eels.  We were back at the dock at 1:00 PM and we all went off to work.  Not a bad way to enjoy an October morning, before heading off to the salt mines!

Kindest regards / Barry

10/18/032 Chas Stamm Big Bass in the harbor

Fished with HRFA member Roger Muller and his friend Leo today for an off tide but big fish.  We landed three fish over 20 pounds. 10/13/03  George Dalcero Blues

Hi Charlie,
George Dalcero here.......
Spent Fri to Mon at Misquamicut Beach and fished the BREACHWAY (an opening from the ocean into the bays and ponds inland) surrounded by jetty-like rocks on both sides ... about 100ft wide).
There were tons of menhadden baitfish in the Breachway and thousands of Blues (with Stripers below them) running out with the outgoing tide.
I only saw a handful of Stripers being caught by 2 guys using live bait and fishing deep.
At least 50 blues at a time were online on both sides with many doubleheaders. I caught and released a 9pounder and 10 more 10 up to 14 pounds ... what an experience!!!
I uses a 9inch surface popper - blue and white with silver sparkles which was hit instantly within 1-2 pops of it~! Sometimes the fish were so powerful, I thought I was snagged on the rocky bottom ... it took all my strength to get them moving again! One of the fish had a tail that was at least 9-10 inches top to bottom.
What a great place to fish Charlie ... only a 2 hour ride from Bergen County via Tappan Zee Bridge and Route 95 ... Exit 91 ...then Rt 234 to Westerly, RI just across the Connecticut state line.
I was amazed at the numbers of people who I saw fishing EVERY DAY!
See you at the meeting.........George

10/11/03 Chas & Doris Stamm East River Striped Bass

Fished with my wife Doris today. We fished for a couple of hours and released two really nice bass.  Both around 15 pounds.  35 inches.   Outgoing tide in the lower sections of the East River. Water temps are down to 65 degrees. I like that better than 70 degrees.  What a great fishery.  15 minutes from the Englewood Boat Basin in Jersey and catching great fish like this. This has got to be one of the world's greatest places to catch fish.

10/5/03 AlpineBoat Basin Big Striper!

Chas.  Late yesterday afternoon(Sunday) I went to the Alpine Boat Basin.  A gentleman there caught, before I arrived, a 41" striped bass.  He had it on a table when I got there.  No one had a measuring device or scale so I remember what you had said when this situation had come up before--use a one dollar bill, 6".  I measured just short of 7-one dollar bills.  He caught it on fresh bunker about 4:00pm at the very southeast corner of the Basin.  I think the tide was incoming.  He took the fish with him.   Bruce Halstater

Chas fished with HRFA member Carl Hartmann for the two day tournament of the HRFA. Together we caught about 20 fish but nothing in the running for any prizes.   The closest we came to any money was a 14 pound Bluefish by Chas on Sunday.   Plenty of bass and bluefish on Saturday in the 12 pound range for the blues and 15 pound range for the bass but nothing to beat Ralph Roth's 21 pound bass that won the tournament.  Still had a great time competing.

9/20/03 Lower Harbor after Isabel

Fished the lower harbor today for a SLOW day of fishing.  First day with calm weather after the Hurricane passed by. Past two days had whitecaps all over the lower harbor and cloudy water to make things worse.  In any event the fish were leery enough to notice some things had changed in their environment and decided to lay low for a while.  Just a couple of small bluefish for the days supply of worms and fuel. Talked with K-Seas who only managed a couple of bass as well.       Perhaps tomorrow.  Chas  <'////><

9/7/03 Chas Stamm & Joe Curvino Lower Harbor Action

Chas & Joe fished several sections of the East River today.   Powerboat races shut down the Lower Hudson around mid-day.  That activity will really turn off the fish. Anyway the action was still good in the East River.  Season should just about be over for the weakfish and the big bass and blues should be starting.   Reports around the 31 buoy of 20 pound bass are becoming more frequent.  We had bass up to 15 pounds in several locations. Blues were still small.  I hope to have some of those slammers come through in the next coupe of weeks.  Always have in the past!  Chas  <'////><

8/28/03 Fred Edwing & Al Sternberg Vz Bridge Action

alan sternberg and fred edwing (Fric and Frac) had a good day fishing the VZ bridge  area today   - the weather was magnificent and they caught fluke, porgies, (sea robins of course) blues, but best of all was 6 weakfish up to 34"  -- sandworms on a hook with a straw berry plastic worm did the trick -- alan (who loves to catch weakies) got 3 up to 33" and fred got a 34" along with some others up to30"-- a couple of others were lost when they got off or lines got crossed during the heat of  battle   - it was a good day  around

8/22 - 8/24/03    Big Weakfish     Chas Stamm

Fished with Ken Carson on Friday and Joe Curvino on Sunday this weekend for some big weakfish and small blues.  Both Friday and Sunday had nothing but big weakfish.  Nothing under 31 inches.  Fished near the Vz. bridge.  Biggest weak was 33 inches but all were over 31 weighing in between 9 and 11 pounds.  Not a lot of them but the ones we got were big.  Friday night we got some small Blues and stripers.  Sunday Joe and I went out again to the same weakfish.  Big Weaks again ... nothing under 31 inches. biggest 34 inches.  We also managed a couple of small bluefish and one small fluke.  all on artificial worms.  Chartreuse.

8/17/03 Tim Havlusch Fluke

7lb 2oz fluke on Sunday August 17th on the Barnegat light reef with a live mullet during a very slow drift and right before a tremendous thunderstorm.  This fish was caught on the fishing rod & reel I won at the HRFA meeting last Tuesday!

8/17/03 Lower NY Bay Weakfish
HRFA Vice President Tony Evangelista and frustrated surf fisherman Director Nils Eckhart were treated to an afternoon of outstanding fishing in lower New York Bay aboard Director Glenn Blanks boat on Saturday 8/17. Glenn's expertise put the anglers on weakfish on every drift resulting in the afternoon's catch of 14 tiderunners up to 30 inches. Rumor has it that as a result of this trip Nils is now boat shopping and plans to use his surf rods for tomato stakes!

8/17/03 Vz. Blues  Chas Stamm

Fished alone today for the outgoing water at the Vz. Bridge.  A slow day as I only got out at noon.. Was trying for some of the same big weakfish we had last week but it was not to be. With no bait, the weaks were not interested in my artificial offerings.  All I wound up with was a couple of bluefish. Some were good sized as I had my hands full with one pushing 12 pounds on the light weakfish tackle  Chartreuse jelly worms drifted along the bottom produced all the fish.

8/16/03  Point Judith  Rick Knapp

Hi Hudson River Fisherman, On Saturday August 16, 6 of us took a charter out of Point Judith, Rhode Island. We fished the southwest ledge at Block Island, and boated 10 stripers, with the largest 3 weighing in at 40, 39, and 38 pounds. We released 4 stripers that were over 30 inches long. Over 20 blues came to the boat, with some in the 15 pound range, most of the blues were returned to fight another day! Most of the fish were caught within 2 hours of high tide, on the large tubes, with a rubber sandworm on the rear hook. They say the tuna have finally shown up, that will hopefully be our next trip.

8/14-15 Niagra River Smallmouth Al White

I had an invitation from Darren Cardinal to check out the Smallmouth bass fishing on Lake Erie & Niagara River. Darren had chartered one of the local guides from Grand Island, NY with a 21 foot Lund boat for two days of non stop action and I mean non stop. Chris although only in his early thirties has bin a licensed caption for more then twelve years and has fished the area almost all of his life and can he put you on fish. We caught between 100 and 120 Smallmouth each day between 2 and 5 pounds. We used live shiners and crawfish for bait on very small #2 hooks with 6 pound fluorocarbon leader off a three way. I have never had that much fishing action and I am looking forward to a return trip. Al White

What a day and what a fish the Bass were busting sandeels on top of the water we saw at least 3 or 4 30lb fish jump out of the water chasing these baitfish. it was an experience of a lifetime watching my son bring this fish to the boat and the look on his face when it was finally in the boat " Priceless"

8/11/03 Montauk Striped Bass Wlat Weglinski

Want a good fishing trip in Montauk? Go after the stripers. Right now there
are a bunch of nice sized fish around, and the charter boats are regularly bringing in fish of
twenty-five pounds and better. But, for the fish of the week, a private boat took the honors. Jimmy
George brought in one weighing 69 pounds Sunday morning. I guess he caught it trolling, but some
guys like to keep their secrets secret.

8/10/03 Lower Harbor Weakfish Blues and Fluke Chas Stamm

Fished alone today for a mixed bag of fishing in the lower harbor. First came the birds working a school of small blues at Diamond Reef.  Surface poppers and castmasters worked well on bringing in a handful of 4 to 5 pound bluefish.  The Flats produced a couple of fluke and weakfish but the bigger fish came from the area of the Vz. bridge.  33 inches was my largest weakfish.  Around ten pounds I guess.   Got him on a three way rig using a 6 inch flying lure in chartreuse.  I just use the jelly portion of the flying lure with a standard 4/0 bait holder hook.  Have a bunch of these things left over from the TV commercial we did for these people a few years ago.  Don't use the hook portion of the lure but the chartreuse rigs give a nice profile and the color works well on the larger weakfish. This is the second week in a row of produceing ten pound plus weakfish on this rig.  Picked up a couple of fluke as well.  HRFA director Glenn Blank, fishing along side of me managed a few larger fluke than I did.  He likes the grape colored jelly worms.  We fished only the outgoing tide today.  Chas  <'////><

8/2/03 Chas Stamm & Joe Curvino Weakfish

Chas & Joe fished the lower harbor again this week and targeted what the river was offering.  Weakfish. Didn't get a lot of them with the biggest being a 10 pounder brought in at the Vz. Bridge.  A chartreuse "Flying Lure" was used to fool this big weaky.  Don't know if it was the flying lure or just the color and size of the bait but that's what caught him.  We also got a couple of small fluke and bluefish.  Chas  <'////><

The weather was cloud but the drifting was perfect, mostly on outgoing tides.

Location:  West Long Island Sound.     Bait used:  Squid and spearing

7/18/03 Pete & Jack Lower Harbor

Jack-of-all Trades.   Went out 7/17 got to the Light Houses around 5:30pm,
low tide at 6:00pm.  Winds were light outta the NE.  We saw a lot of birds
cruising the lower harbor and saw bunker in the heavy traffic areas between
Ellis Isl & Battery Park.   We anchored in 14' of water.  Off the
starboard side/stern we caught 1 large blue, 10-12lbs and boated 3
stripers.  The largest striper was 25".  All returned safely.  Bunker
chunks  were the only offering taken, charlie rigs and bucktails were
ignored.  Afterwards we realized off the starboard stern was a hole about
17'-19' deep.  Our starboard lines hooked up 5 times to the port side 2.
After 2.5 hours we boated 4 fish and had twice as many runoffs/hookups.  We
used wire leaders and fish finders  had the best results.  Nice aftenoon
all around.

This was the first nice fish hooked in the Pop Pops boat the day of the JCAA fluke tournament, Carl was not going to be beat by some snot nosed kid, and I don"t blame him. Carl fished hard and placed 4th  for the JC port. It was a lot of fun on the water that day and a lot of laughs. The fishermen on the boat age ranged from 12 years to 80 something yet we all had the same goal.

The striper surf is still up at Sandy Hook.  Yesterday's favorable ENE winds, although stiff and kicking up a rough surf, helped bring some larger stripers within casting distance, until the winds shifted around to unfavorable SE, which quickly chills the water and stops the bite.  I caught 9 hard-fighting stripers to 32" -- 5 of them between 29"-32", plus a lot of large sea robins. I use Shimano bait-runner reels on both of my rods and look for cuts in the offshore sandbars.  So far this year, I've caught 132 stripers and 100 bluefish from shore -- in the ocean, bays and rivers.  Tight lines! Maybe it's the weather or maybe they are starting to move out but they were smaller and less numerous than the ones we caught at same tide and location two weeks ago.  They hit during the last half of the incoming and slacked of with the tide.

6/3/03 Stripers Sandy Hook George Sendecki

I fished on the FISHERMAN today for STRIPERS. When I arrived at the boat I thought I smelled bacon and eggs. Yes. In the cabin was RON SR. cooking up breakfast.

The best fresh Taylor Ham & Eggs on a roll to start the day. It must be the salt water.  It was quite a pleasant surprise. Very reasonable price also.

We left the dock about 0730 AM. Fished in the Sandy Hook area. The first drop of the anchor was a quick spurt then tapered to a pick. We moved around the same area and Capt. Ron set us up on several schools of fish. There were many DOG FISH as well as large SKATES.

I saw LARRY ZAHN of Clifton get a half a cooler full of large skates. He also caught a nice FLUKE I would guess about 2 to 3 Lbs. LARRY also got his limit of STRIPERS.

One fellow caught a WINTER FLOUNDER that had to be 2 Lbs. Not bad on big clam hooks.

I overheard Capt. Ron talking to the Mate Robert (Bob).   Capt. Ron’s complaint was he can’ find enough small STRIPERS to fill the slots fish for the customers.

I believe everyone went home with nice stripers.

George A. Sendecki took the pool with a STRIPER of about 14 Lbs.

Thanks Capt. Ron Sr. Great Cook.

Thanks Capt. Ron Great job of finding fish and some fine net jobs.

He was like Speedy Gonzalez all over the boat. Chumming with clam pieces, cracking clams and shells as well as netting Bass, gaffing skates and untangling lines.

Thanks Mate Robert (Bob) shucking clams, Distributing bait, Netting & Gaffing as well as cleaning the fish for thoes who wanted.

Great job on a nice clean boat.

Fished near Troy with very high and very dirty water conditions. Caught only
one shad all day. Don't know whether the run is over or whether it was the bad
conditions.

stripers or shad.

5/31/03  David McMillen  Striped Bass

Hi Chas,
Happy to say I was down and out over the weekend with the weather and all around here but took the kids and the GF out today (Friday) and had a very productive day.  Boated (and released) 23 fish in 4 hrs using bloods and sandworms on a drift from Torches restaurant on the outgoing back towards Gully's.  West side.  Weird.  Biggest was 28 lbs.  Water temp 64 degrees.  Fish were wackin it at a higher level than normal (8-10 ft.).  Looks like they will be around for awhile more since my finder was busy talking all day.  Tight lines after the rain this weekend.  Good thing we stocked up on the bait.  Cottonwooods are flying but the fish are still driving.  A totally weird run this year.

5/27/03 Rich Berlingeri Sea Bass

On Wednesday May 27th I took a charter with 15 of my co-workers out of Belmar. We fished aboard the SkyLarkII with Captian Steve Spinelli and his mate Billy. Capt. Steve put us on top of the sea bass and it was non-stop action. The bass were good sized up to 2 1/2 pounds. We also caught several Black Fish, two of which were keepers. Billy did a wonderful job of filleting our catch. We all took home a plentiful supply of delicous fillets. We were fishing over three different wrecks in about 70 feet of water. The bait was clams.

We lost count at around 20 stripers from 24 to 39 inches with a couple of blue's mixed in.   All were caught on clams in the Romer Shoals area.  (Just look for all the party boats).  Kept a few that were deep hooked or in bad shape.  Time to get out there!

5/24/03 Phil Kozak  Hidden Harbor Striped Bass

Today Sat am water temp 60.7 wind out of the NE Lt 10 kts. Started just south of hidden harbor one boat fishing had 20 bass. We ony picked 1 32 inch bass moved south to the area just south of the water tank. First time I have ever saw a school of large bass right on the surfaced. The boat a scatterd them a large comotion on the surface. Continued to search for that school and a litter further south in 14 foot of wate we located another large school. Stayed in that area for the rest of the outgoing tide and released 51 bass to 40 inches, Most fish in the 31 to 34 inch class. Very interesting thing about the largest bass it was a male. I always was told the male bass do not get over 36 inches.  Like I said looks like the spawn is two weeks late. Based on how we did last year. Tagged 15 bass out of the 53 caught had to keep two bleeders. I also have learned how to extract a deep hooked fish with out any serious injury. We had about 7 of the bass hooked deep and there were no bleeders when we released them. We are using non off set cirlce hooks.

5/16/03 Bernie Smith Troy Stripers!

Bernie Smith and Andy Corona landed three Striper Bass just south of the 378
bridge near Troy New York.
We fished from 1:30 to 4 pm on 5/16/03. The fish were caught on the incoming
high tide using live herring.
We also had several run offs. The fish were measured and released unharmed.
We landed a 28 inch, 30 inch and 32 inch fish. They were not weighed in the
interest of a quick release.
The water temperature was 55 degrees, air 62 degrees light breeze and
overcast sky. The herring were easy to find and
we also managed to grapple a few shad with our herring rigs. It seems like
we are starting to see more groups of smaller fish
up here. Still looking for that 30 pounder.
See you on the river.

Fluke

5/14/03 Fluke Atlantic Star George Sendecki

I fished the ATLANTIC STAR this morning May 15. The boat is clean the Capt.Tom Buban is First Class. He works the boat to keep you on the fish. We had a steady pick from start to finish. The head mate is Rich. He is very Sharp and has a ruler for an eye. One of the Fluke I caught was 1/2" short and he called it. I asked him to measure and he was correct. That is a guy that knows his job. The other mates were also on the ball. Very few people even had to ask for the net. These guy were there. Very fast alert as well as Gentlemen. The Sea Robins out numbered the fluke. The boat total was about 40 Keeper Fluke as well as some small Bluefish. Top Fluke was by Karl Bernstel from Belmar. I would guess it to be around 4 Lbs. He had a few nice fish. It was flat calm, sunny, and warm. Just enough wind to make a nice drift.

Great Capt.,Crew and the group of fisher people were pleasant. For this time of year I think we did great.

the first fish almost "landed" me on the Rocks.  I'll be back soon with
some buddies.
Keep his head up...

5/10/03 Sandy Hook HRFA Kids Fishing Report! Rich Berlingeri

On Saturday May 10th several adult members of the HRFANJ had the pleasure of taking their children aboard Captain Bob’s Atlantic Princess.

We left from Great Kills Harbor in Staten Island a bit delayed due to engine problems but the Captain and his crew were determined not to disappoint the “school” of HRFA Juniors on a possibly life changing fishing event. Remember the first big one you landed you were hooked for life.

The Captain took us down to the bountiful shores of Sandy Hook NJ. Things started off slow at first but then Captain Bob found the sweet spot and put us right on the fish. We pulled in a mixed bag of fluke, Blue’s and the winged unmistakable Sea Robin. One young angler thought he had landed a sea monster and refused to be photographed with the creature least it haunt him in some future expedition on the high seas.

Marvin’s crew caught the first keeper fluke to get the excitement going.

Leslie Shan caught  a huge doormat Fluke. It certainly would have been the pool winner but alas no pool! Sorry Leslie.

Alan Sternberg was using a pink jig head and caught his fair share. Richie Berlingeri commented  that “Dad, that guy is using a pink thing a ma jig and is catching them left and right!” Alan,  Richie wants to order a gross of those things.

Tim and Kathy Burden hooked many anglers with the cupcakes they brought and Tim hooked and tagged several Blues.

Rich Berlingeri and four of his boys went home with several sumptuous fillets of fluke and Blue fish.

New member Frank Choi and his son Steven caught several fish on this their first party boat trip ever. Frank came with me to Hooked on the Hudson and joined the club on the spot. Frank wants to learn how to fish, well he’s certainly come to the right place.

The best always comes last---HATS OFF to Glenn Blank! His dedication and drive in taking as many kids fishing as possible will pay off in future generations of  avid fishermen and women who had their first experience on an exciting expedition arranged by Glenn. Thank you!

5/10/03 Newburgh striper frustration! Dave McMillen

My fish finder blacked out today for the first time this year.  Always good news?  You would think but what the....?     These fish ain't hungry or something.  Threw everything at them for 6 hours Saturday and landed 5 in the 10 - 20 lb range.  Most would say  "good show dood" but.. I am saying.. what the @%#&?  Anyway as crazy as it has been out here this year... I gotta go to " they're commin" mode.  I mean I see 'em man but why ain't they hungry?  Water temp 57.  Like Shortline busses in a row...Winds 5 mph from the NW.  Flat water.  Cloudy then sunny then cloudy then sunny.   Fished outgoing to incoming. Drifted in 35 ft. and marked the motherload at 15 to 25. but.. like the dood in the Rudolph movie that is picking for gold... sniff sniff sniff.......NOTHIN.  ( well I did say I got 5 right?)  Where be da big mama jamin MOFOS?  At! any  rate....  I 'd rather be fishin than mowin.  Tight lines to the masses on the big water as manana is tantuher day.  :)  Oh.. bait bloodworms, live herring.  Trying eels tomorrow. Then it's off to Esopus I guess.  Thanks to the fuel gods for finally opening In Cornwall/Newburgh.

5/10/03 Phil Kozak More frustration Striped Bass

Sat should have been a great day, but it wasn't National Fishing Volunteers work hard to release just 10 Stripers from 25 to 31 inches. Rich Czop from NJ and his crew fish hard. We started on the East shore just across from the Esopus light house, There wasn't enough tide so we moved to the flats and released 5 another five were released t south bay and then back to the flats on the afternoon.
So far this year hasn't been that good and I am wondering if the harvest levels from previous years are starting to add up. Charlie I hope that your organization takes this message and mounts a campaign to end the Kill tournaments on the Hudson River. The state of New York lacks the back bone to protect these spawners and the fishermen and those who run these tournaments should take heed of this warning.
They broke the state record on Friday with a 55 lb female, to me no big deal. The largest and oldest come to this river to procreate. That fish has been coming back to spawn in this area for the past 20 years her gene pool now will reside on some ones wall. There were three kill tournaments this weekend alone targeting the fish that make this fishery what it is. Striped Bass are like Salmon they come back to the same area year after year    The State should step in a protect these fish like NJ does and close the harvest during the major spawning months. April 1st to May 31 and only allow non off set circle hooks to use when bait fishing. I will know in the next two weeks if my concerns are worth considering as I have not seen the large schools of Bass that normally arrive this time or the year.
Thanks for letting me blow off some steam.
Phil Kozak
President
National Fishing Association

Phil...Our Two Day derby did stress "Catch and Release."  I believe we were the first to do so.  We had 198 anglers participating.  We had 100% survival rate for released fish.  I can only hope more tournaments follow our lead.  Next year we will have more and bigger prized for released alive striped bass.  B.A.S.S. has done it for largemouth bass.  We have to work to make it the same for the Striped Bass.    Chas  <'////><

5/7/03 Bear Mountain  Angus Thompson

Fished 4 hours Wednesday afternoon from Bear Mtn, along the wall at the shoreside park.  Caught one nice striper, 28" at 9 lbs.  Quite a nice fight on a small rod. Several other small ones were caught by folks nearby; we saw one other fish at 18", but nothing really big hitting yet.  Much slower fishing than last weekend.  All the locals there say the big ones are still coming.  Caught this one on bloodworms just at high tide.

Using worms, jigs, bucktails

Weather conditions Rainy

Yesterday, HRFA members Wayne Geider, Joe Acunto, and myself weathered a full day of mixed rain and slow flounder fishing (seven keepers) on the Shrewsbury River.  Lucky for us, we got a repreive by an onslaught of marauding bluefish. We were reeling our rigs to end the day of fishing, when a bluefish hit Joe's line (still rigged with worms). Of course we stayed and when we docked two hours later, there were 33 blufish in the boat!   Wayne Geider landed the largest fish for the day (9lbs 13oz), shared high hook honors with me (14 fish apiece) and Joe Acunto had a 16.75" flounder.

I arrived in Troy, NY around 4pm Friday.  I tried the normal spot with no luck and a hard time casting due to high water levels on the river from recent rains.
I moved across the river to a spot I had heard about... my gf joined me of course ;)   Friday night I landed a 15lb striper.
Saturday, I started fishing at 6am and it was COLD.  A few runs, got one on for a few mins, but lost it... then at 8am... a small tug... small tug... my gf sets the hook (she doesn't wait for runs)... 45mins later, she hands me the pole because her arm hurts... 20 mins later... our 31lb striper hit the shore (we didn't have a scale until an hour or two later).  We caught another 15lb fish later on.  Sunday it was cold again and the fishing was horrible.  There were no herring to be found in the streams, and barely any stripers in the river, we managed to pull in a 10lb before calling it quits.

All fish were caught on fresh chunk, 1/3 of the fish heads or tails only... nothing on middles.

What a fight on a 6ft light weight pole!

Reply from Ceely's to Kevins complaint...

Ceelys

I would like to rebut Kevin's report on 5/1/03 on Thursday I had got Herring in on Monday and as Soon as I get it in the phone starts ringing.  How they know when I have it I don't know sometimes.  I have a small business but it is a respectable one I have a good reputation.  When someone calls and ask me to reserve bait I'm more than happy to when its available and I have a good supply.  When Kevin called I had herring but I had reserve being held and I had to take a talley of who had what and what was picked up and what was needed.  I was honest with him when I told him if I had any available I would sell them but I had none that weren't reserved, actually I had to short some people because I had to many die.  I don't reserve dead bait because I never know when or what I'll have at any time.  I'm so sorry he had such a bad experience at my store.  I try to be fair to everyone and treat every one as fairly as I can.  I could understand if I told him sure the bait is here come on down and when he got here I said tough luck,( but that's not what happened.)

                                                          Thanks Karol

4/29/03 J. Kierwan Coxsackie

My name is J. Kirwan.  I caught a 33" fish today at about 3:30pm off of the Coxsackie Landing shore.  Didn't take the water temp but as I said, the weather was sunny and windy.  The tide was high slack to outgoing.  Have heard a lot of reports of smaller schoolies but only the three larger fish that I mentioned in the first email.  Haven't seen any herring as of yet, used frozen herring from down south.  That's all I have, if you need anymore information, let me know, I will continue the posts as I succeed.  Unfortunately, I have all the time in the world to fish for stripers..ha.
Thanks.

4/27/03 Freddie the Hook Bethlehem

Fished Bethlehem on Sunday, April 27, 2003.  Caught 3 white perch and
one small mouth bass about 14 inches.  All caught on worms.  Tried using
the perch for striper bait but no luck.  The perch do work for holdover
stripers in the summer when the run is over.  No herring or shad, but
guys were netting some herring near shore.  Gotta learn to do that.
Water was cold but not too high or murky.  Ramp wasn't crowded but that
will change this weekend I bet!  I will keep you advised.

Freddie the hook.

4/27/03 Tappan Zee Bridge Mike Banahan Striped Bass

Hi Chas,
Just got back late sat night from scuba diving in Mexico.
Never received the picture, but thanks for trying.
Went fishing by the TZ bridge yesterday.  Beautiful weather and fishing.
Caught 7 fish in about 2 hours.  Smallest was 12 pounds.  Most were in
the 15 to 18 pound range. All caught on Herring chunks with a fishfinder and 2 ounce sinker in 15 feet of water.
There were about 20 boats in the area although most were trying the deep
channel.
I believe a lot of these boats were in the water and fishing as a result
of your fishing tournament.

There were no herring to be caught friday or saturday.  Friday evening there were quite a few chad.  The rain moved in friday night and there were no shad or herring to be found saturday morning.  Finally I caught a small chad saturday morning, which I then chunked and used the head portion as bait... around 45 mins later I landed a larger striper, I had no scale, but I'm guessing well over 20 lbs.

4/26/03 Piermont Pier

Once again the HRFANJ has sponsored a great event. The Piermont Pier in Piermont (duh) NY was the location of the latest official club outing.

15 members of the HRFANJ fished, feasted and had a great time. Welcome to new member Howie, who has visited our site "everyday for the past two years". Howie signed up right on the pier. Was it the great fishing expertise we have to share, the camaraderie, or the sausage and peppers? Tell us Howie!

The south side of the pier was the hot spot and everyone caught fish multiple times. That translates into a lot of fish. Many were over the legal size limit of 18" up to a whopping 33" in the striper category. However the largest fish was not a striper. It was caught by a junior member of the HRFANJ Surf Marines--Private Richie Berlingeri--hooked and landed on his own (the fish was netted at the shore) a 35",16.5 pound Carp. Now that is a worthy catch for any Surf Marine. You should have seen Richie's eyes bugging as he reeled in this monster carp on his 6' 6" Ugly stick. Richie showed great form and will make the HRFANJ proud for years to come.

flounder

4/22/03 Marvin Oresky Flounder

Fished with Wayne Guyda on the Manesquan River for flounder.
Weather conditions were initially rainy, then cloudy, and then sunny.
Fishing was very slow.  Throughout the day boats were moving up and down the
river looking for the fish.
Wayne got 7 flounder and I caught 5 flounder. All the flounder were
esentially caught during high slack tide and low slack tide. The highlight
of my day was a 2 lb. 1 ounce flounder which I caught on clams. Flounders
were also caught on blood worms and sand worms. Majority of flounder caught
on sand worms.
Flounder fishing should get better when  warmer weather conditions and
warmer water  conditions exist.
Marvin Oresky

4/21/03  Rich Berlingeri Striped Bass Plum Point

Made a trip with the family today to Plum Point. Besides getting blasted by the wind we only caught one very small striper (at least we weren't skunked). Fishing from the shore with bloods and cut fresh herring. They have been catching a few but no real numbers. Looks like down river is still holding them. My guess Piermont pier should be red hot still and hey aren't we having a HRFA outing there this weekend, Saturday April 26th.

4/19/03 Ken Sheldon Croton Striped Bass

Hi,
My Dad Ray, my son Matt and I were finally able to get out and we fished Croton Point on Wed 4/16/03.  My son Matt outfished all of us, landing 10 stripers, the largest at 9lbs.
We got out again 4/19, and fished incoming to slack to outgoing tide at Croton.  Matt took top honors catching 9 or 10 [lost count], this time with a 17lb striper winning the day. What a nice fight.  He also had fish in the 5, 7, 9 lb range.  My best was just under 9 lbs.  My Dad also caught one after Matt gave him his "lucky seat" in the boat.
Everytime we landed one, the boat nearest us would up anchor and drift closer.  We were the only boat we saw catch fish yesterday.  The guy in the closest boat said it was better then watching fishing shows on ESPN!!
What a fun day to spend on the water with my father and son.
Water temps ranged from 43-48.
All caught on bloods.  All let go to be caught again.
Attached is a photo of my son Matt with his 17lber.

flounder

4/14/03  Willard Bierwas Winter Flounder

Willard Bierwas and Artie Cole fished out of the Atlantic Highlands
on Monday 4/14/03.  8 keepers were caught (and several throwbacks) on the
outgoing tide with a water temp of 44 degrees off of Keansburg.
It looks like the flounders have finally started to move from the rivers and
are biting.  The largest flounder was 16 1/2".  It looked like a small
fluke!  Bait of choice was sandworms and clams.  However, we added an orange
salmon egg to several rigs and caught most of our fish with the baits that
had the orange salmon egg combo.  Hope this trick helps put a few extra fish
in the coolers.

4/12-13/03  Striped Bass Derby

Many good sized striped bass were caught in this two day event.  The winning fish were 25 pounds, 23 pounds and 21 pounds.  31 striped bass were weighed in  but hundreds were caught and released before bringing them in to the scales.   Leading fish were announced every hour over the marine radio so as not to bring in fish needlessly.  Most of the bigger fish were caught on cut fresh herring, not live herring.  Most came from south of the Tappan Zee Bridge on the flats north of the Piermont pier.  Many came from north of the Tarrytown marina near Croton.   That's as close as I can get you to where the fish were caught.  The winning fishermen gave us a little to work on but no specifics.  I can't blame them.   Lets look forward to this event again next year.  Story and photos at this link. I fished the Navisink River today from 0930 to 1400. (Incoming threw outgoing). I chummed with Three Chum Logs, Mussels that I crushed, Cooked Rice, and Corn. The water temp at full high was 47 Deg. At the Oceanic Bridge.  As the tide went out the temp went up to 50 Deg.

I caught one 13” flounder for the day.

I saw one other flounder caught. It was nice much larger than mine.

I spoke to one local at the ramp he said he got one fish at 11” and he released it.

3/29/03 Piermont Pier Rich Berlingeri

I just have to say that the HRFA has provided me with some of the best fishing experiences in my life.

Please, tell me with what other group of fishermen can you spend a perfectly miserable rainy afternoon of getiing soaked to your ...  watching Glen Blank catch all the fish (almost all the fish) and still wish you were no where else on the planet? Can't can you! Feasting on gourmet hot dogs and fresh sausage and peppers did help.(PIERMONMT PIER   MARCH 29TH 2003)

Where else can you go fishing with a group of guys that have the formidable title of "Surf Marines" (watch out Striper Hussein)--on a party boat in waters that remind you of "The Perfect Storm"---green to the gills--and still hang on to the rail and your pole and pull in blue fish after blue fish and your buddy next to you will unhook your fish cause you can't take your eyes off the horizion or you'll lose what your stomach no longer contains? Can't can you!

Well on April 26th we're doing it again at the Piermont pier. Rumors have it that there may be a cookoff on who produces the best Sausage and Peppers (is that a challenge?)! And wouldn't we all like to see HRFA Director Stamm as in Chas Stamm leave his beloved boat and hang with the MARINES.

I really have no title nor as much participation as so many others but in a corner of my heart you will find etched with a Gamakatsu hook--HRFA and in the other corner--Surf Marine!

Again hats off to the best guys I have had the honor to fish among!

Rich

3/18/03  Croton Stripers Micky Maynard

Hello Chas,

Thanks for the reply about my security questions regarding the
lower Hudson. I made it down late in the day on Monday the 24th
and launched, but didn't get to fish until Tuesday. I went
straight from Haverstraw Marina to Croton and had to go no
further. The stripers were in the bay in large schools of 3 - 10lb
range with a few nicer ones also in the mix. There were several
other fishermen on the schools as we casted lures (I used a 7"
black and silver Rapala) in about 5 feet of water. The temp in the
bay was around 44 degrees while the water in the main channel was
several degrees cooler. The natives tell me this method of fishing
doesn't last long as the water soon warms up in the main river.
Over the three days fishing I caught and released well over 60
fish! I have attached a shot of my best fish caught Tuesday the
25th, a 38 incher.
Thanks again for for your help and for the outstandng job with
the HRFA web site.

Regards,
Mickey Maynard

3/8/03 Fred Edwing Venice, Fla

just returned from a 2 1/2 week trip to venice florida (west coast, between sarasota and ft, meyers) dispelled theory of west coast not being good surf fishing by catching pompano, sheepshead, whiting, spotted weaks , drum, small blues, ladyfish, catfish, etc. etc. -- gulf fishing is different in that water is mostly calm and you may only get one or two tides day -- just find a rock pile and it abounds with fish- best of all you poke around in the sand and get all the sand fleas you want which are excellent bait.- on a trip on my son,s boat i tied into a 6lb jack cravelle and thought i snagged a low flying air liner -- it was music to my ears to hear that drag screaming out.-- returned home to  get stuck in the snow accumulated in my driveway  -- will embellish on this trip at the next meeting if time allows  -- fred edwing

2/28/03 Joe Spilewski Sarasota, Fla  Striped Bass!

Great News! Striped bass surprising bay catch this Wednesday in Sarasota bay on a jig at Saprito Pier. This was the first striper ever caught in this bay.No tag was mentioned. It was a 16 inch striper.

Spanish mackerel,Seatrout,Sheephead,Redfish small Blues and Snook are active as of this date 2/28/03 in the bay. It's 80 degrees in the shade today 2/28/03 .    Think about those tight lines.Best wishes .      Oldcrow2  Joe Spilewski

2/22/03 George Sendecki  Sea Bass

I fished the 125’ Jamaica Thurs night Fri Morning  02/21/03 trip. When I booked I asked the girl when could I board the boat. She said the boat would not be sailing the day before so I can board anytime I like. I figure I will get their early pick my spot and go to sleep. I arrived at about 9 PM.

You can board the boat anytime you wish BUT cannot enter the cabin until 10 PM. It gets cold standing out there. I chalked it up to missed communications.

We had about 65 people on board. It was a perfect ride out. No wind or waves.

The anchor was dropped and we fished. With no wind and there was no current we just bobbed around. Could no get tight on the anchor and had many tangled lines all over the boat.

The fishing was a pick. The Capt and crew worked very hard setting and resetting the anchor. We moved around a few times. Later in the day the wind did pick up a little. We got tight on the anchor and the fish came over the side.

All in all I think everyone had a good day. Everyone went home with Giant Seabass up to about 6 or 7 lbs. I am no expert on judging the weight. There were several Spiny Dog Fish, Silver Eels, and Mackerel.

There were two conversations that I heard several times on the boat that I feel should be noted.

1)        A few of the people caught many more than the limit of 25 Seabass. One guy was said to have caught as many as 60.

What are we as fishermen supposed to do about that?

2)        Some of the fishermen were keeping the fish alive. Was the other comment I heard several times.

2/14/03 George Sendecki Atlantic Highlands

I fished on the Prowler 5 (the name had to be changed because the Sea Fox V registered the domain name of "Prowler V". I do not understand it at all) today 02/14/03. It was COLD. The water temp. has dropped to 43 deg.F. Capt. Scott Hilliard tried very hard. We set on the first wreck and it was Zip. he giggled the boat and we did catch some fish. He moved around the first wreck three times, and we did pick a few ling each time. We moved to two other wrecks and all was slow. As hard as Capt. Scott tried it was not a high total for the boat. I think everyone got dinner. I did not see any Blackfish. I was lucky enough to catch a Cod. It was short And released. I hope he made it back so next year I will catch him again. We had a group of about 14 people. Great folks to fish with. The winter brings out people who want to fish. Some days are great and some days you get by. No different than life. Some days you feel great others you feel fair. My thanks to Capt. Scott Hilliard and that great hard working mate Mark. The mate is a guy that is on the move all day. Set the anchors. Pull up on the port anchor, pull up on the starboard. Make sure everyone is at the best part of the wreck. Then after everyone goes home with the filets. He has to clean the boat for the next trip. Treat your mate well.       George

2/9/03   George Sendecki Atlantic Highlands

I fished on the PROWLER V out of Atlantic Highlands today 02/09/03.

This boat is 75’ Aluminum with 1400 Horse Power. It is fast clean and well kept. We fished around the tip of the Mud Hole about 150’ of water. The first spot was a bit slow except for one fellow who caught a half of a 5-gallon bucket of Ling. We moved to another spot. About 3 miles away. Everyone did very well with Ling, Blackfish as well as a few Mackerel and Herring.

It was a bit windy and cold in the morning. I think you have to expect that in the winter.

Jake Jakubik of Sea Bright with a 9lb Blackfish won the pool.

The PROWLER V is a family run business that fishes every day the weather allows the boat to sail. With the years of experience they know the area and do try their best to bring you to the fish.

We were privileged to have Capt. Glenn Hilliard and Mate Mark provide a great day. The mate is a gentleman, as well as a professional who kept making rounds to see that everyone was catching fish. He assisted landing fish and gave helpful advise to catch more fish.

The total for the boat was well over 100 Ling and about 35 Keeper Black Fish.

I'd be happy to show anyone from the club the best spots. It's cold in the mornings and it warms right up into the 70"s.The fishing varies from day to day and hole to hole.It will explode one day and then nothing the next day.   If you go deep on a charter boats, expect snappers, and gag grouper for the day.Tight lines.
