Fishing Knots New!

For the year 2003
We had a great year. Plenty of big bass and great sized weakfish here in the Harbor. The big bluefish did not hang around very long. We saw plenty of smaller, cocktails, but not many of the bigger blues...in the 12 pound range. Also had some big weakfish. Many over ten pounds. Not allot of them but the ones we caught were big. How did you do?

12/8/03 Al White Blackfish
Lou, Darren, Chris and myself fished aboard the Hyper Striped with Capt. Pete Wagner and Mate Jimmy out of Highland, NJ. The plan was to leave the dock at 6:30 AM and locate the schools of Striped Bass on the surface and cast jigs or plugs to them. We headed south from the end of Sandy Hook all the way to Monmouth Beach, but no signs of bass anywhere. So we went to our alternate which was to anchor up in about 75 ft. of water and try for some Blackfish. Wind was blowing to 20 mph out of the North air temp started at 26 degrees and warmed up to 36 degrees and the water temp was about 47 degrees. We had a continuos catch of 45 to 50 keeper Blackfish up to 9 1/2 lb. We had a great day and I know some great eating for the next couple of weeks.

12/4/03 Ted Sheola Sandy Hook
Fished a calm surf at Sandy Hook late Thursday afternoon (12/4) under
cloudy
skies, light West winds (5-10 knots), water about 48 degrees. Chased after
fast-moving pods of bass and finally got into them at the main bathing beach.
Using shad lures and swimming plugs with teasers, caught and released more than
16 stripers to 24.5 inches. The bass blitzed the beach, pursuing hapless
peanut bunker right into the wash, from about 3:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on the
incoming. Although not as big as some caught earlier, they were a lot of fun. The
feisty bass appeared to be very well fed and fought well.
Tight lines!

12/04/03 George Sendecki Blackfish
What a great day on the ATLANTIC STAR out of the Atlantic Highlands. Captain TOM BUBAN and Mate RICH worked very hard to make sure everyone on board went home with BLACKFISH. I cannot tell you how many times we moved. These guys really worked in this cold. The thermometer in my car read 24 degrees when I got to the boat. It was clear, cold with a light west wind. When Rich set the anchor the sun was out. It warmed up nicely. Some of the people caught 5 or 6 keepers others like yours truly caught one keeper. I could not believe how many fish were caught that were 13 & 13 ¾
I think the government put the 14 limit because they know most of the fish are 13. How many ½ short SEA BASS, FLUKE did you catch this year.
Sorry to go off. Bad subject.
Some ling were caught as well as 1 nice seabass that had to be put back (season closed) as well as Dogfish.
CARL H. PALESTRINI of Aberdeen NJ took the pool with a nice 6 pound BLACKFISH.
Way to go Carl.
Thanks to CAPTAIN TOM and MATE RICH for another great trip. We were the last boat back to the dock.

11/24/03 Al White Niagra River Steelhead!
We fished the Niagara River, Lake Ontario side from Lewiston, NY on Monday, November 23. We hoped to catch some Steelhead, Lakers and maybe Muskies. We met Captain Chris at the launch ramp and first headed north along the NY side fishing a number of spots with no results. He then ran up river past the United States and Canadian power generator plants to the Devils Hole. A section 3 miles below the falls and 1/2 mile above the generators we were using egg sacks either chartreuse or pink on the smallest hook I ever used, off a three way with a 2 oz pencil sinker. The Steelhead were stacked along the edges of the hole and on the first drift we caught the first of 16 or 17 Steelheads with the largest being close to 15 lb. The weather started to change as a front started to moved through the area. We started to move back down river so we were closer to the launch ramp. Chris said he new there were some Lakers in the area so we made a couple of drifts and caught 3 or 4 Lakers to 15 lbs. We had planes to fish on Tuesday but the wind blew all night with gust up to 45 mph and that turned the river muddy brown so we had to cancel. All of the stories I've heard about the Niagara seem to be true. I am looking forward to fishing it again next year.

our first spot catching aprox 6 fish up to 36 inches on really fat 33 incher. Also got a
few fish down in the harbor. All fish caught on eels. We tried chunking out at the
31 bouy at the end of the outgoing tide but had no luck other than 2-3 nibbles.
11/11/03 George Sendecki Porgies and Seabass
I was fortunate to fish on the ATLANTIC STAR today 11-11-03. This is a ¾ day trip.
It leaves the dock at Atlantic Highlands at 7:30 AM and returns around 2:30.
Today we came back late. We had to move for a mud barge to drop its load and Capt. TOM did not want us to loose fishing time. (The barge made every boat move and never did drop it load of mud. Just went back towards Sandy Hook.)
Capt. TOM BUBAN and Mate RICH ran the boat.
The morning was cool with some sun. Then it became mostly cloudy and cooler.
I would guess upper 40s. A hooded jacket and sweater was fine.
Green Crabs and Clams were supplied for bait. Most of the folks did not want to use the Crabs when they saw the Porgies and Seabass coming over the side in such nice numbers.
The feeling of many was why spend the time to catch one legal Blackfish when you could go home with more food.
Today TOM & RICH worked harder than normal to keep us on KEEPER fish.
We moved several times in the area of the Mud Buoy.
All the folks caught fish.
There were many more Porgies than Seabass caught.
CHARLIE TOTH of Port Monmouth NJ won the pool with a nice Seabass.
BLACKFISH limit goes up to 8 fish per person on Saturday the 15th of November.
Capt. TOM said he would be spending more time looking for them then.

Impelled by Carl Bruger's admonition to find a new spot every year, caught
and released two carp - 12lb/12oz (29") and 10lb/14oz (27") fishing brand new
spot - shore-trail area beginning at what they call Croton Landing - north of
Senasqua Park and the Croton Yacht Club. Bob Boyle mentions this general area in
his Hudson River book. Very easy fishing - 35 to 40 foot lob cast - this area
has 4 to 5 feet of water even at dead low. Chum with some canned corn kernels
and bread (squeezed around a small rock so it gets to the bottom and stays
there while slowly breaking up - add to it occasionally), and fish corn kernels
and bread combo - 2 oz sinker and 12 - 15 lb line on #4 hook.

We were successful at landing two nice fish both over 30 inches with several runoffsand two lost at the boat. Charlie rigs punched the ticket(I finally found the Phenoms) with flourescent yellow tail. Here are some pics and could you please send me another application.

Went out fisihing with my mom and dad and the wonderful Chas Stamm. Even under windy
conditions we were able to catch two fish. My father, R. John caught a beautiful striper
and myself my largest stiper of my life that weighed in approximately 23.5 pounds and was
40 inches in length. In the past month I have broken my record on stripers three times and
have to thank Chas Stamm for all his coaching and expertise. I have fished the river for
years and have never been so sucessful as the past month. Thank you Chas.
My parents were amazed how the East River has cleaned up and what large fish come out of
it. I have to make a note that Al White was nice enough to come by my boat when I was
catching the big one and cheered me on with his buddy. The HRFA is a great group and I
recommend to anyone that is not a member to join right away if you ever want to catch fish
and learn about the wonderful fishery that is available so close by. Roger Muller

10/16/03 Barry & Dan Davis Striped Bass Hi Charlie! Wanted to send in a fishing report about the beautiful day on the water I had with my brother, Danny Davis along with Dan Riemann from The Outdoorsman, last Thursday. My brother Danny turned out to be high hook with the attached picture of the 36 " striped bass, caught on the incoming tide in the East River, that morning. We all saw some bass or blue fish action that morning with fish up to 16 lbs., fishing rubber worms & sand worms or live eels. We were back at the dock at 1:00 PM and we all went off to work. Not a bad way to enjoy an October morning, before heading off to the salt mines! Kindest regards / Barry

10/13/03 George Dalcero Blues
Hi Charlie,
George Dalcero here.......
Spent Fri to Mon at Misquamicut Beach and fished the BREACHWAY (an opening from the ocean
into the bays and ponds inland) surrounded by jetty-like rocks on both sides ... about
100ft wide).
There were tons of menhadden baitfish in the Breachway and thousands of Blues (with
Stripers below them) running out with the outgoing tide.
I only saw a handful of Stripers being caught by 2 guys using live bait and fishing deep.
At least 50 blues at a time were online on both sides with many doubleheaders. I caught
and released a 9pounder and 10 more 10 up to 14 pounds ... what an experience!!!
I uses a 9inch surface popper - blue and white with silver sparkles which was hit
instantly within 1-2 pops of it~! Sometimes the fish were so powerful, I thought I was
snagged on the rocky bottom ... it took all my strength to get them moving again! One of
the fish had a tail that was at least 9-10 inches top to bottom.
What a great place to fish Charlie ... only a 2 hour ride from Bergen County via Tappan
Zee Bridge and Route 95 ... Exit 91 ...then Rt 234 to Westerly, RI just across the
Connecticut state line.
I was amazed at the numbers of people who I saw fishing EVERY DAY!
See you at the meeting.........George

Water temps are down to 65 degrees. I like that better than 70 degrees. What a great fishery. 15 minutes from the Englewood Boat Basin in Jersey and catching great fish like this. Chas. Late yesterday

gentleman there caught, before I arrived, a 41" striped bass. He had it on a table when I got there. No one had a measuring device or scale so I
remember what you had said when this situation had come up before--use a one dollar bill,
6". I measured just short of 7-one dollar
bills. He caught it on fresh bunker about

10/4 & 5/2003 Chas Stamm & Carl Hartmann Bass & Blues
Chas fished with HRFA member Carl Hartmann for the two day tournament of the HRFA. Together we caught about 20 fish but nothing in the running for any prizes. The closest we came to any money was a 14 pound Bluefish by Chas on Sunday. Plenty of bass and bluefish on Saturday in the 12 pound range for the blues and 15 pound range for the bass but nothing to beat Ralph Roth's 21 pound bass that won the tournament. Still had a great time competing.

9/29/03 HRFA Youth Angler Trip
The Explorer 2000 youth fishing trip abroad the Atlantic Princess out of Great Kills
Station Island, NY was another success. Forty-one young angler participated and
caught three different species Porgies and Sea Bass. The total count was about
100 fish. They fished a number of locations of Rockaway and Sandy Hook. Once again because
of the new moon tides the current was running very strong and we needed lots of lead
sinkers to hold bottom.

9/20/03 Lower Harbor after Isabel
Fished the lower harbor today for a SLOW day of fishing. First day with calm weather after the Hurricane passed by. Past two days had whitecaps all over the lower harbor and cloudy water to make things worse. In any event the fish were leery enough to notice some things had changed in their environment and decided to lay low for a while. Just a couple of small bluefish for the days supply of worms and fuel. Talked with K-Seas who only managed a couple of bass as well. Perhaps tomorrow. Chas <'////><

9/7/03 Chas Stamm & Joe Curvino Lower Harbor Action
Chas & Joe fished several sections of the East River today. Powerboat races shut down the Lower Hudson around mid-day. That activity will really turn off the fish. Anyway the action was still good in the East River. Season should just about be over for the weakfish and the big bass and blues should be starting. Reports around the 31 buoy of 20 pound bass are becoming more frequent. We had bass up to 15 pounds in several locations. Blues were still small. I hope to have some of those slammers come through in the next coupe of weeks. Always have in the past! Chas <'////><

8/28/03 Fred Edwing & Al Sternberg Vz Bridge Action
alan sternberg
and fred edwing (Fric and Frac) had a good day fishing the VZ bridge area today
- the weather was magnificent and they caught fluke, porgies, (sea robins of
course) blues, but best of all was 6 weakfish up to 34" -- sandworms on a hook
with a straw berry plastic worm did the trick -- alan (who loves to catch weakies) got 3
up to 33" and fred got a 34" along with some others up to30"-- a couple of
others were lost when they got off or lines got crossed during the heat of battle
- it was a good day around
8/22 - 8/24/03 Big Weakfish Chas Stamm
Fished with Ken Carson on Friday and Joe Curvino on Sunday this weekend for some big weakfish and small blues. Both Friday and Sunday had nothing but big weakfish. Nothing under 31 inches. Fished near the Vz. bridge. Biggest weak was 33 inches but all were over 31 weighing in between 9 and 11 pounds. Not a lot of them but the ones we got were big. Friday night we got some small Blues and stripers. Sunday Joe and I went out again to the same weakfish. Big Weaks again ... nothing under 31 inches. biggest 34 inches. We also managed a couple of small bluefish and one small fluke. all on artificial worms. Chartreuse.
8/17/03 Tim Havlusch Fluke 7lb 2oz fluke on Sunday August 17th on the Barnegat light reef with a live mullet during a very slow drift and right before a tremendous thunderstorm. This fish was caught on the fishing rod & reel I won at the HRFA meeting last Tuesday!
8/17/03 Lower NY Bay Weakfish HRFA Vice President Tony Evangelista and frustrated surf fisherman Director Nils Eckhart were treated to an afternoon of outstanding fishing in lower New York Bay aboard Director Glenn Blanks boat on Saturday 8/17. Glenn's expertise put the anglers on weakfish on every drift resulting in the afternoon's catch of 14 tiderunners up to 30 inches. Rumor has it that as a result of this trip Nils is now boat shopping and plans to use his surf rods for tomato stakes!
8/17/03 Vz. Blues Chas Stamm
Fished alone today for the outgoing water at the Vz. Bridge. A slow day as I only got out at noon.. Was trying for some of the same big weakfish we had last week but it was not to be. With no bait, the weaks were not interested in my artificial offerings. All I wound up with was a couple of bluefish. Some were good sized as I had my hands full with one pushing 12 pounds on the light weakfish tackle Chartreuse jelly worms drifted along the bottom produced all the fish.
8/16/03 Point Judith Rick Knapp
Hi Hudson River Fisherman, On Saturday August 16, 6 of us took a charter out of Point Judith, Rhode Island. We fished the southwest ledge at Block Island, and boated 10 stripers, with the largest 3 weighing in at 40, 39, and 38 pounds. We released 4 stripers that were over 30 inches long. Over 20 blues came to the boat, with some in the 15 pound range, most of the blues were returned to fight another day! Most of the fish were caught within 2 hours of high tide, on the large tubes, with a rubber sandworm on the rear hook. They say the tuna have finally shown up, that will hopefully be our next trip.
8/14-15 Niagra River Smallmouth Al White
I had an invitation from Darren Cardinal to check out the Smallmouth bass fishing on Lake Erie & Niagara River. Darren had chartered one of the local guides from Grand Island, NY with a 21 foot Lund boat for two days of non stop action and I mean non stop. Chris although only in his early thirties has bin a licensed caption for more then twelve years and has fished the area almost all of his life and can he put you on fish. We caught between 100 and 120 Smallmouth each day between 2 and 5 pounds. We used live shiners and crawfish for bait on very small #2 hooks with 6 pound fluorocarbon leader off a three way. I have never had that much fishing action and I am looking forward to a return trip. Al White

least 3 or 4 30lb fish jump out of the water chasing these baitfish. it was an experience

was finally in the boat " Priceless"
8/11/03 Montauk Striped Bass Wlat Weglinski
Want a good fishing trip in Montauk? Go after the stripers. Right now there
are a bunch of nice sized fish around, and the charter boats are regularly bringing in
fish of
twenty-five pounds and better. But, for the fish of the week, a private boat took the
honors. Jimmy
George brought in one weighing 69 pounds Sunday morning. I guess he caught it trolling,
but some
guys like to keep their secrets secret.
8/10/03 Lower Harbor Weakfish Blues and Fluke Chas Stamm
Fished alone today for a mixed bag of fishing in the lower harbor. First came the birds working a school of small blues at Diamond Reef. Surface poppers and castmasters worked well on bringing in a handful of 4 to 5 pound bluefish. The Flats produced a couple of fluke and weakfish but the bigger fish came from the area of the Vz. bridge. 33 inches was my largest weakfish. Around ten pounds I guess. Got him on a three way rig using a 6 inch flying lure in chartreuse. I just use the jelly portion of the flying lure with a standard 4/0 bait holder hook. Have a bunch of these things left over from the TV commercial we did for these people a few years ago. Don't use the hook portion of the lure but the chartreuse rigs give a nice profile and the color works well on the larger weakfish. This is the second week in a row of produceing ten pound plus weakfish on this rig. Picked up a couple of fluke as well. HRFA director Glenn Blank, fishing along side of me managed a few larger fluke than I did. He likes the grape colored jelly worms. We fished only the outgoing tide today. Chas <'////><
8/2/03 Chas Stamm & Joe Curvino Weakfish
Chas & Joe fished the lower harbor again this week and targeted what the river was offering. Weakfish. Didn't get a lot of them with the biggest being a 10 pounder brought in at the Vz. Bridge. A chartreuse "Flying Lure" was used to fool this big weaky. Don't know if it was the flying lure or just the color and size of the bait but that's what caught him. We also got a couple of small fluke and bluefish. Chas <'////><

7/18/03 Pete & Jack Lower Harbor
Jack-of-all Trades. Went out 7/17 got to the Light Houses
around 5:30pm,
low tide at 6:00pm. Winds were light outta the NE. We saw a lot of birds
cruising the lower harbor and saw bunker in the heavy traffic areas between
Ellis Isl & Battery Park. We anchored in 14' of water. Off the
starboard side/stern we caught 1 large blue, 10-12lbs and boated 3
stripers. The largest striper was 25". All returned safely. Bunker
chunks were the only offering taken, charlie rigs and bucktails were
ignored. Afterwards we realized off the starboard stern was a hole about
17'-19' deep. Our starboard lines hooked up 5 times to the port side 2.
After 2.5 hours we boated 4 fish and had twice as many runoffs/hookups. We
used wire leaders and fish finders had the best results. Nice aftenoon
all around.

The striper surf is still up at Sandy Hook. Yesterday's favorable ENE winds,
although stiff and kicking up a rough surf, helped bring some larger stripers within
casting distance, until the winds shifted around to unfavorable SE, which quickly chills
the water and stops the bite. I caught 9 hard-fighting stripers to 32" -- 5 of
them between 29"-32", plus a lot of large sea robins. I use Shimano bait-runner
reels on both of my rods and look for cuts in the offshore sandbars. So far this
year, I've caught 132 stripers and 100 bluefish from shore -- in the ocean, bays and
rivers. Tight lines! Ted

6/3/03 Stripers Sandy Hook George Sendecki
I fished on the FISHERMAN today for STRIPERS. When I arrived at the boat I thought I smelled bacon and eggs. Yes. In the cabin was RON SR. cooking up breakfast.
The best fresh Taylor Ham & Eggs on a roll to start the day. It must be the salt water. It was quite a pleasant surprise. Very reasonable price also.
We left the dock about 0730 AM. Fished in the Sandy Hook area. The first drop of the anchor was a quick spurt then tapered to a pick. We moved around the same area and Capt. Ron set us up on several schools of fish. There were many DOG FISH as well as large SKATES.
I saw LARRY ZAHN of Clifton get a half a cooler full of large skates. He also caught a nice FLUKE I would guess about 2 to 3 Lbs. LARRY also got his limit of STRIPERS.
One fellow caught a WINTER FLOUNDER that had to be 2 Lbs. Not bad on big clam hooks.
I overheard Capt. Ron talking to the Mate Robert (Bob). Capt. Rons complaint was he can find enough small STRIPERS to fill the slots fish for the customers.
I believe everyone went home with nice stripers.
George A. Sendecki took the pool with a STRIPER of about 14 Lbs.
Thanks Capt. Ron Sr. Great Cook.
Thanks Capt. Ron Great job of finding fish and some fine net jobs.
He was like Speedy Gonzalez all over the boat. Chumming with clam pieces, cracking clams and shells as well as netting Bass, gaffing skates and untangling lines.
Thanks Mate Robert (Bob) shucking clams, Distributing bait, Netting & Gaffing as well as cleaning the fish for thoes who wanted.
Great job on a nice clean boat.

On Wednesday May 27th I took a charter with 15 of my co-workers out of Belmar. We

we located another large school. Stayed in that area for the rest of the outgoing tide and
released 51 bass to 40 inches, Most fish in the 31 to 34 inch class. Very interesting
thing about the largest bass it was a male. I always was told the male bass do not get
over 36 inches. Like I said looks like the spawn is two weeks late. Based on how we
did last year. Tagged 15 bass out of the 53 caught had to keep two bleeders. I also have
learned how to extract a deep hooked fish with out any serious injury. We had about 7 of
the bass hooked deep and there were no bleeders when we released them. We are using non
off set cirlce hooks.
