I started fishing about 12:00 and within 1/2 hour I got a fierce hit that bent the pole in the spike and line started to peel out from my reel for a good 50 to 75 yards and I knew it was a nice size fish. after 10-15 minutes as I got it close to shore he went airborne and spit the hook out, it was a bluefish of about 6 to 8 pounds. I rebaited and within half an hour the same thing happened except this one cut my leader of about 30/40 lbs. Re-rigged again with a wire line leader this time and got another hit as soon as the bait hit the water and I was in for the biggest fight yet, by now a crowd was gathered cheering me on, this fish refused to give up and kept peeling line out of my reel. after about 20 minutes he managed to jump in the air and shake the hook loose. No fish landed but had a great day of excitement. Anthony Carbone 10/1/05 Nick A Hey guys, Another great weekend of fishing. Finally got on the River again Saturday Oct 1, with Teddy K. We started out at diamond reef, but the tide was barley moving, so we hit the VZ bridge. We had action all day lots of fluke still hanging around in the shallower water, tons of robins, some blues breaking water and lastly 2 keeper weaks..... 9/30/05 Chas Stamm & Chasbo East River Blues and Bass Fished with one of our regular fishing friends from up River...Chasbo and his friend Ed. Chasbo fishes the Hudson on a regular basis up in the Newburgh area. Today he came out with me to experience some of the East River Bass and blues. Chasbo and Ed were not disappointed at our first drift produced three nice fish at the same time. Triples! Two nice bass in the 15 pound range and one ten pound bluefish. Birds were working for the first have of the tide which kept us pretty much in fish on every drift. Moved down river to several other spots for a slow pick. One more nice 15 pound bass at Dimond reef but the best was in the earlier part of the day. Bucktails probably landed most of the fish with surface lures and metal producing as well... This from my customers... Ed, and I finally met Capt. Stamm, and what a day we had. I know it isn't fair for him to post a report here on one of his charters, but I can. We went to learn how to fish the east river, and harbor, and Capt. Stamm, "Got It Done!" I can't tell you exactly how many, or how big they were, but we had of action all day. Top Water, Jigging, even my Timex got a hit. We caught both Big Blues, and Stripers. Oh, and Capt. Chas Stamm got a mussel, on an eel. That is a first. Christmas is coming, but for those who want some piping hot action before the holidays, "Take It To The River, Now!!" From one Chas, to another, Thank you Captain for a most memorable day. ChasBo& Ed

Not only is it a short run for us...and has the best fishing around...but with the price of fuel, it's the most economical spot we can reach by boat. Anyway.. we got about ten fish each on this trip. Bass and blues. No big concentrations of birds working but we managed to have fish on each drift. Bass up to around ten pounds and blues to 8. A good day was had on bucktails on the bottom and "Charlie Rigs." We fished only one tide today. Incoming.
9/6/2005 Tom Guyre Fluke Chas, 9/4/2005 Chas Stamm Bigger bass and blues showing up Fished the East River again today for some great bass and bluefish action. The bass and the blues were all in the 6 to 8 pound range. Much bettter than the 3 to 5 pounders we have been getting. On a sour note, I went down to the Englewood Boat Basin on Saturday to find my boat had been broken in to and all my rods and reels were stolen. Had about 15 outfits taken. All conventional gear. They left the spinning outfits. All my rods had "Chas Stamm" etched above the foregrip. Anyone coming across any custom made rods with that name on them...I would like to buy them back. chas@hrfanj.org 9/3/05 Steve Cherry Raritan Bay Steve Cherry caught a total of 40

Our day started late and missed much of the surface action. We got down to the center of the harbor around 9:30 am. Met up with HRFA members Mark Strober ( Fishin Mission) , Glenn Blank. They had just finished fishing a great surface blitz of bass and bluefish. Figures! Our timing was poor. We moved up in to the East River and found very few fish . In turn, Chief Mate Buddy and his crew were busy netting fish all day long! Youth angler Joe Johnston had High Hook honors of the day bagging eight fluke as he out fished his Uncle Chuck Mitchell. Other honorable catches went to Brendan Cardinal and his Dad Darren with ten fluke; the Savarese Family had fifteen fish; and Lexi Eckhart and Anthony Hunt combined their talents to land eleven fish. 7/10/05 arthur denny caught a total of 4 7/10/05 Dave Keery caught a total of 25 7/6/05 Donny Manning "DIODAMO" caught a total of 40plus 7/3/05 Joe Nardello Lowe Harbor Blues I

Went out the following day with Joe Curvino and we could not miss. Bass...doubles on every drift up to 15 pounds. Bluefish also in the same places. Big bluefish chasing the bass up to the surface. Trip Report HRFA's Youth Trip Coordinator Glenn Blank organized another great day of fishing for 48 students from Hudson County's EXPLORE 2000 PROGRAM and Cliffside Park High School's Environmental Club. Tuesdays half-day trip aboard the ATLANTIS PRICESS (from Staten Island, NY) was blessed with great weather, good tides, and just about everyone on board caught fish. The catch consisted of fluke, sea robins and skates. All off these fish were tagged and released as part of the EXPLORE 2000 PROGRAM. A special thank you to HRFA members Wayne, Tony, Bob, Mike, Len, Marvin, Al, Glen and also the crew of the ATLANTIS PRICESS.
I received an invitation along with Glen Blank and Chuck Michel to do some Blackfish and Black Sea Bass fishing from Captain Ralph Roth on his new 25 foot Parker the Weigh Point out of Jersey City. We left the dock at 6:00 AM and headed south past Sandy Hook all the way down to one of Ralph's many spots a few miles off the beach from Deal, NJ. As soon a we drooped the anchor and got our lines in the water we had Black Sea Bass. The larges being over 5 lbs. The next spot produce Blackfish with the larges their being over 9 lbs. By the end of the day we limited out on Blackfish and had 7 or 8 large Black Sea Bass each. On the trip home off Sea Bright NJ we ran into a large school of Bluefish up on top with birds working over them in the 3 to 7 lbs size. We caught fish for about an hour and had to leave because it was getting late. We had a great day bottem fishing and the blues were a bonus. There were schools of scattered fish no great shakes. Did manage to release on nice 10 pound channel cat. Left for southern waters Stopped at Newburg nothing doing there. Stopped at liberty state park for fuel. Decided to run down the Staten Island shore line to Great Kills. Never made it. As I made the turn at the VERENZANO it looked to fishy to continue. I made a few look sees just north of Hoffmans Island. Set up just as the incoming was about to start. Set up in 10 foot of water. Put out three rods and the first few fish I missed didn't have the clam hooked right, but after that it was double and triple headers. One fish was under 28, but the rest were all over 35 inches and three went into the forties. I weighed two one was 25 and the other was 28 pounds. It was the first time that I had to quit because my left arm was hurting from pulling fish in. I released 19 fish and lost or missed another 10. From 2 until 5 30 PM it was non stop and I left them biting. I couldn't pull my anchor and two elderly fishing men came to my assistants and pulled it for me. I left and ran down to Manasquan to over night at Hoffmans Marina. Sunday went in the river just east of Hoffmans and released 9 short fluke and had to nice keepers 17 and 18 inches. Landed and released one nice striper on the head; it was fun trying to net her with no one else on board. Be aware, Fish and Game were on the water and going boat to boat asking to see what was in the fish box. While I'm not crazy about the rules as they stand today, I'm glad to know someone's out there nailing the stinkers who keep 20 inch bass. 5/16/2005 Dave Keery Striped Bass Report received: 5/17/05 Water Temperature: . Moved around but went back the same area and lost three good fish and tagged two more 10 and 13 pounds. Sunday went south again with wind against the tide found a large school just south of the water treatment plant, but couldn't get set on them. Moved to the same area as the day before fished in 7 foot of water nothing doing moved to a channel edge 10 to 14 foot and tagged two fish one 20 pound and one 13 pound females. Waited for the tide to turn and then wind swung out of the northeast wind little tidal action We ran out orf bait to the channel cats some weighing as much as 6 pounds. I do feel that NY DEC in it infinite wisdom has allowed an overharvest of large spawning females. This season and last there has been fewer and fewer large spawning females, but plenty of smaller fish. water temp rose to 58 degrees by Sunday afternoon. I would just pose one question to the DEC. Why do they protect the fresh water species such as Black Bass, small mouth and large mouth with closed seasons during their spawning times and neglect to do the same for the Striped Bass?????

weekend. I have spoken to several anglers and the larger females again are not up river
yet. Seems to be the same as last year, Spoke to one charter captain and he has not seen a
major school so far this year. Seems the trollers are catching the smaller fish. One group
of three brought in three, but nothing of size. Black Creek area is the hot spot. Several
boats had one large female. Also Certified Marine still isn't selling fuel yet and I
noticed that not that many boats were at their marina. I have been told that Roburties up
by the falls is able to sell fuel. The herring run is still going on. I have heard
complaints that there is heavy netting going on at the falls. Some feel this does not bode
well for future runs as they don't give them time to spawn. DEC should learn how to manage
the river for all species. Also their have been complaints of higher dockage fees. This
could be why not that many transient boats are not here. There could be a need for the
higher fees due to the major damage that ocurred. River temps approaching 56 degrees and

I have never seen the river so bad with debrie fields 4 and 5 ft wide stretching for hundreds of feet. It started at the upper end of Havestraw bay and continued all the way up to Rondout creek. I would consider the river to dangerous to travel after dark/ The marinas on Rondout have major damage. Certified has gas problems and won't have gas for another week at least. Rondout lost most of its finger piers and some were damaged also. I took a major hit on the starboard engine just north of Newberg and lost the lower unit Hauled the boat today and will frind out if I have power head problems to. I was on the water yesterday afternoon behind Croton Point in a 12 foot boat. Water
temperature was between 38 and 40 degrees. The bay was empty of ice but the coves were
frozen. As a matter of fact the boat ramp had piles of snow blocking it but one guy spent
all day chopping a way through it. We were in three feet of water. |

Using tip ups and minnows pulled three pickerel and one large mouth through the holes. The bass was about 14 inches, the largest pickerel about 18. All went back through the holes to their ice water mansions. Only one other guy fishing, he was saying he gets trout and kokanee in the spring trolling a wabler and worm. I've never caught one of those in Glass Lake, but may bring the fish finder and try the deep water next time. Freddie the J |
Fishin' Mission -- Fished Sunday 1/09/05 ( yes January! ) On Paul H's Renagade with Paul & Captain Glenn Blank. What a great day to be on the water in January. Light winds and moderate tempetures. When we first started fishing we got 4 schoolie stripers right away. We started the usual high 5's, but then the action stopped for a while. We tried off the Rockaways since it was so nice out, but no action. Then Glenn suggests we try one of his secret hot spots. I'm thinking "yeah sure" anything you say. Well we were all suprised when we started catching large fish there. Glenn had 4 keeper size bass to 33 & 1/2 inches, I sneaked out 3 nice ones and Paul landed a nice one. We had a total of only 17 stripers, but considering the time of the year and the large fish it was another great day on the NY Harbor. Glenn was high hook as usual. Don't try to bribe me for his secret spot since I took an oath of secretcy. All fish were released and most tagged. The only other boat we spotted fishing was none other than the King of the Harbor Howie! I attached some pictures Paul took with his digital camera. Tight Lines -- It ain't over till the fat striper sings! |

| January 1, 2005, Glass Lake, NY Ice Fishing !! Fished through about four inches of black clear ice today, using tip ups and minnows. Cloudy, mid thirties, stiff NW wind. Caught five pickerel, 12 to 24 inches, the biggest was about three pounds. As they say, first ice is best. Resolved to only go one day a weekend from here on out, have to get some chores done before spring,a nd to pay attention to the weather reports, that wind is no fun. Freddie the J 12/25/04 Fishin' Mission , after talking to Captain Glenn Blank describe his Christmas day, yes your heard me right , these lunatics fished on Christmas! Glenn fished with Paul H on the Renagade Christmas Day for a total of 55 schoolies stripers, with the largest a 27 & 1/2 incher with a Pink belly tag from the Maryland fisheries, caught by Paul who is catching on fast, from his teacher Glenn! I took these guys up on their offer to fish with them Sunday 12/26/04, yes these nuts fished 2 days in a row! Despite very windy conditions we still had a great time, joking around and landing 36 schoolies before the wind and snow sqwals got too bad! Glenn showed off and out fished me by 3 fish, he caught another with an HRF belly tag. Paul sure has a nice boat, and that semi heated cabin saved us all from frost bite!! Made my 22 footer seem like a surf board! Tight Lines to all and have Happy Holidays!12/19/04Fishin' Mission fished Sunday 12/19/04 well less than a week before Christmas and the stripers are still biting like crazy. The weather was perfect most of the day, with light winds and mid 40 temps. The NY Harbor water tempetures were between 42 -- 44 degrees on the surface. Only the hardcore diehards are out here this time of year. The team of Captian Glenn Blank and Paul H on the Renagade were bangging away, they had a total of 87 schoolie stripers. Glenn had to leave early and Paul went back out to make sure he caught just 1 more than Glenn. I myself caught over 50 schoolie stripers. Glenn and I were tagging most of our fish. Glenn also caught a striper with a pink belly tag from Maryland. As it started to get dark the weather started to get bad with the rain and wind picking up. Paul and myself had to do the hardest thing a fisherman can do! And that's to leave them still biting! |

11/30/04 FISHIN' MISSION Fished Tuesday 11/30/04 It was one of those days, when you just can't go to work! Zero wind, and reasonable tempetures. I personal caught and landed and released 129 yes one hundred twenty nine ( I counted with a pad and pen ) schoolie stripers from 11 inches to 26 inches. Plus an additional large amout were lost at the boat which I did not count. As my friend Squid Joe says " not in the boat, doesn't count "! All fish were caught in NY Harbor and surrounding areas, drifting not anchored! Hope the weather holds out so I can do it all over again. The winds were cold and blowing hard as we tried outside the Vz. bridge. We were in Paul's 25 foot Parker. Nice to have the cabin to get out of the elements. Tried several spots along Norton's Point and Breezy point but only picked up a couple of schoolie bass. Coming back in to the lower harbor to get away from the winds, we picked up several bass between 12 and fifteen pounds with Paul bringing in one bass weighing 18 pounds. Outgoing tide with a strong southern winds made conditions tough. Live eels and small diamond jigs were the baits we used. |
11/23/04 Fishin' Mission well I know all you report junkies wanna know how me and club member Pete Orenzo did on Tuesday November 23, 2004 This time I counted I had 59 stripers from 18 inches to 28 inches. And I'm sure Pete had about the same since we were trying to out do each other all day! We would of had more except Gary with the Baja boat called us while we were working pods of fish off Coney Island to "quick hurry" to the tip of Sandy Hook, for miles of fish and birds. Well club member and Captain Glenn Blank was fishing near by and we both ran out for this school of fish of a life time! Well as we arrived they had just dispersed, not a bird or fish. Ohh well we still like ya Gary! Ran back North and continues to jig fish with Glenn Blank, Gan Wong, & Ed Scola Jr. all fishing and catching near by, until it got dark.

. This is schoolie striper season! It's very possible to jig over
100 stripers a day! Everyone was catching, club member Pete Orenzo
brought a friend on his boat who claimed it was the best day of fishing he ever had! ( boy
was Pete doing a number on that guy, outfishing him 10 to 1 ) Saw lots of
other members catching too! Gan Wong was into fish all day as he
usually does. The crew on the Renagade was catching. Captains
Glenn Blank and Ralph Roth ran out and came back with loads
of big blackfish. The best fisherman on the river A/K/A Howard
Leeman was off to one of his secret spots to catch large stripers. Glenn
Cinelli with his boat Cast Iron ran out to Coney Island for some
nice bigger stripers on the jigs. Tight Lines to all, me and Pete

Stripers and Blues The weekend of Nov 6th & 7th
fishing report from the 3 Js. I was out both days did o.k. Wind, Wind, freakin wind cant seem to get away from it, Saturday was very
windy, wind against tide, had to power drift to catch fish, got 12 bass up to 36 inches
and 5 bluefish up to 34 inches. On Sunday morning early there was no wind a gorgeous day
got 14 bass up to 36 inches and 1 bluefish about 32 inches.one
striper about 34 inches had a littoral soc. Tag attached. It seems that once we passed
this last full moon and the swing of the tides the fishing started to pick up, hopefully
the rest of the month is good for fishing. 11/2/04 FISH'IN MISSION fished Tuesday 11/2/04. It was one of those days that all fishermen dream about! You leave in your boat not knowing exactly how the day will turn out. Got tired of the East River & NY Harbor so... I headed south to the Rockaways and to Raritan Bay. Well I was into fish from 7:30 AM right until I left em' biting at 2:30 PM!!!! No bait -- just jigged stripers and blues. I figure well over 100 yes ONE HUNDRED fish, no real big stripers, mostly in the upper 20 inch range and some real large blues, biggest was 15.5 pounds at 35.5 inches!! Club members ( The 3 Amigos ) Capt. Glenn Blank, Capt. Ralph Roth and Darren Cardinal, showed up on Darren's Parker just as the bite slowed. Well Capt. Ralph who never gets out done spotted some birds with his binoculars off in the distance and we all ran out for another slam fest of bass and blues. Capt. Ralph even managed to show off with a 3 pound fluke caught on a jig!! I actually left them biting as the 3 Amigos kept catching. All fish were released, alot tagged. You have to be careful around Captain Glenn or he might tag you!! Tight Lines to all!
