| January 1, 2005, Glass Lake, NY Ice Fishing !! Fished through about four inches of black clear ice today, using tip ups and minnows. Cloudy, mid thirties, stiff NW wind. Caught five pickerel, 12 to 24 inches, the biggest was about three pounds. As they say, first ice is best. Resolved to only go one day a weekend from here on out, have to get some chores done before spring,a nd to pay attention to the weather reports, that wind is no fun. Freddie the J 12/25/04 Fishin' Mission , after talking to Captain Glenn Blank describe his Christmas day, yes your heard me right , these lunatics fished on Christmas! Glenn fished with Paul H on the Renagade Christmas Day for a total of 55 schoolies stripers, with the largest a 27 & 1/2 incher with a Pink belly tag from the Maryland fisheries, caught by Paul who is catching on fast, from his teacher Glenn! I took these guys up on their offer to fish with them Sunday 12/26/04, yes these nuts fished 2 days in a row! Despite very windy conditions we still had a great time, joking around and landing 36 schoolies before the wind and snow sqwals got too bad! Glenn showed off and out fished me by 3 fish, he caught another with an HRF belly tag. Paul sure has a nice boat, and that semi heated cabin saved us all from frost bite!! Made my 22 footer seem like a surf board! Tight Lines to all and have Happy Holidays!12/19/04Fishin' Mission fished Sunday 12/19/04 well less than a week before Christmas and the stripers are still biting like crazy. The weather was perfect most of the day, with light winds and mid 40 temps. The NY Harbor water tempetures were between 42 -- 44 degrees on the surface. Only the hardcore diehards are out here this time of year. The team of Captian Glenn Blank and Paul H on the Renagade were bangging away, they had a total of 87 schoolie stripers. Glenn had to leave early and Paul went back out to make sure he caught just 1 more than Glenn. I myself caught over 50 schoolie stripers. Glenn and I were tagging most of our fish. Glenn also caught a striper with a pink belly tag from Maryland. As it started to get dark the weather started to get bad with the rain and wind picking up. Paul and myself had to do the hardest thing a fisherman can do! And that's to leave them still biting! |

| 12/17/04 Joe from the 3Js: This is my last report of the season, I decided to
go down to Fishin' Mission fished Sunday 12/5/04 It was breezy but fishable, fished the NY Harbor and I caught, landed and released 106 schoolie striped bass. These are small fish ranging from 12" to 24" . Other hardcore club members were out there along side catching too. Captain Glenn Blank was not only catching 1 after another, but he was tagging most of them too. The Renagade with Paul and Al White AKA Sparky were catching every time I looked over at them. And ofcourse the team of Gan Wong and Joe Nardello were catching like there was no tommorrow. Once again my fingers are all covered with bandaids to keep the blood off this keyboard! Tight Lines to all!

11/30/04 FISHIN' MISSION Fished Tuesday 11/30/04 It was one of those days, when you just can't go to work! Zero wind, and reasonable tempetures. I personal caught and landed and released 129 yes one hundred twenty nine ( I counted with a pad and pen ) schoolie stripers from 11 inches to 26 inches. Plus an additional large amout were lost at the boat which I did not count. As my friend Squid Joe says " not in the boat, doesn't count "! All fish were caught in NY Harbor and surrounding areas, drifting not anchored! Hope the weather holds out so I can do it all over again. My fingers are so cut up and sore from handling all those fish I can barely type this. ( I'm sure you all feel sorry for me )

| 11/27/04 Lower Harbor Bass Chas Stamm Paul Hellmold Al White. Fished with A couple of HRFA members today with some great results putting up with some tough winds. The winds were cold and blowing hard as we tried outside the Vz. bridge. We were in Paul's 25 foot Parker. Nice to have the cabin to get out of the elements. Tried several spots along Norton's Point and Breezy point but only picked up a couple of schoolie bass. Coming back in to the lower harbor to get away from the winds, we picked up several bass between 12 and fifteen pounds with Paul bringing in one bass weighing 18 pounds. Outgoing tide with a strong southern winds made conditions tough. Live eels and small diamond jigs were the baits we used. |
11/23/04 Fishin' Mission well I know all you report junkies wanna know how me and club member Pete Orenzo did on Tuesday November 23, 2004 This time I counted I had 59 stripers from 18 inches to 28 inches. And I'm sure Pete had about the same since we were trying to out do each other all day! We would of had more except Gary with the Baja boat called us while we were working pods of fish off Coney Island to "quick hurry" to the tip of Sandy Hook, for miles of fish and birds. Well club member and Captain Glenn Blank was fishing near by and we both ran out for this school of fish of a life time! Well as we arrived they had just dispersed, not a bird or fish. Ohh well we still like ya Gary! Ran back North and continues to jig fish with Glenn Blank, Gan Wong, & Ed Scola Jr. all fishing and catching near by, until it got dark.
| 11/21/04 FISHIN' MISSION Fished the New York Harbor Sunday 11/21/04
. This is schoolie striper season! It's very possible to jig over
100 stripers a day! Everyone was catching, club member Pete Orenzo
brought a friend on his boat who claimed it was the best day of fishing he ever had! ( boy
was Pete doing a number on that guy, outfishing him 10 to 1 ) Saw lots of
other members catching too! Gan Wong was into fish all day as he
usually does. The crew on the Renagade was catching. Captains
Glenn Blank and Ralph Roth ran out and came back with loads
of big blackfish. The best fisherman on the river A/K/A Howard
Leeman was off to one of his secret spots to catch large stripers. Glenn
Cinelli with his boat Cast Iron ran out to Coney Island for some
nice bigger stripers on the jigs. Tight Lines to all, me and Pete
are ditching work Tuesday to do it all over again!!!

Stripers and Blues The weekend of Nov 6th & 7th
fishing report from the 3 Js. I was out both days did o.k. Wind, Wind, freakin wind cant seem to get away from it, Saturday was very
windy, wind against tide, had to power drift to catch fish, got 12 bass up to 36 inches
and 5 bluefish up to 34 inches. On Sunday morning early there was no wind a gorgeous day
got 14 bass up to 36 inches and 1 bluefish about 32 inches.one
striper about 34 inches had a littoral soc. Tag attached. It seems that once we passed
this last full moon and the swing of the tides the fishing started to pick up, hopefully
the rest of the month is good for fishing. 11/2/04 FISH'IN MISSION fished Tuesday 11/2/04. It was one of those days that all fishermen dream about! You leave in your boat not knowing exactly how the day will turn out. Got tired of the East River & NY Harbor so... I headed south to the Rockaways and to Raritan Bay. Well I was into fish from 7:30 AM right until I left em' biting at 2:30 PM!!!! No bait -- just jigged stripers and blues. I figure well over 100 yes ONE HUNDRED fish, no real big stripers, mostly in the upper 20 inch range and some real large blues, biggest was 15.5 pounds at 35.5 inches!! Club members ( The 3 Amigos ) Capt. Glenn Blank, Capt. Ralph Roth and Darren Cardinal, showed up on Darren's Parker just as the bite slowed. Well Capt. Ralph who never gets out done spotted some birds with his binoculars off in the distance and we all ran out for another slam fest of bass and blues. Capt. Ralph even managed to show off with a 3 pound fluke caught on a jig!! I actually left them biting as the 3 Amigos kept catching. All fish were released, alot tagged. You have to be careful around Captain Glenn or he might tag you!! Tight Lines to all!

| hi again john - this is 2nd time around for this message lst one did not go thru (or did it?) had a good day of fishing with my son eric on his boat - fished boca grande which is famous for it tarpon run - had a perfect day with moderate warm temps and very calm waters -- upon arrival we saw breaking fish every where !! - after the Chinese fire drill in trying to rig up fast we cast in to the feeding fish and proceeded to pull in lady fish, spanish mackerel, bluefish about 2-3 lbs , etc.--- lady fish are called the poor man's tarpon because of their resemblance to tarpon in appearance and fighting antics -- as we were fishing we spotted huge schools and i mean huge schools of large rays swimming in coordinated fashion all over the place--- this amazing sight took place for a couple of hours -- we then opted to try for other species and fished a long broken down pier and did very well with grouper, more lady fish, a couple of rays, and some critters we never saw as they peeled and broke our lines -- through out the day we were visited by porpoises that came right up to our boat and essentially begged for some of our fish - they were surprisingly tame and disregarded our strange looks and kept us company for a while - on the way back we encountered some jacks and again had some line peeling fun. the weather is consistently pleasant now with many species of fish to chase both by boat or beach--- best of all the absence of packed boats or crowded beaches is hard to believe with all of this good weather and fishing action -- keep in touch you all !! fred the converted yankee |

10/23/04 Chas Stamm Lower Harbor Striped Bass
Fished today hoping to get in on some of the bigger blues working the surface of the lower harbor. These reports have been coming in all week of huge schools of bluefish working bait to the surface. Was no to be today. We did get a number of bass in the East River up to 21 pounds but saw no birds working. Fishing was tough due to a cold wind out of the northeast. We did manage to bring in about 8 bass between the two of us. All fish were between 10 and 21 pounds. All fish came in on bucktails off the bottom.

| 10/15/04 Chas Stamm Montauk Striped Bass Went out to Montauk with a couple of HRFA members who arranged this trip. Many members = Many individual trips for all to participate in. One of the strong points of being involved with a fishing club. Anyway this one was for fishing for striped bass in Montauk. Tim Burden and Ron Wang accompanied me on this trip. Went out on the Allysa Ann and fished with wire line and parachute jigs. Tough way to fish but very effective. First time I've fished with wire. I've heard about it but this was my first time. Anyway, we go 19 striped bass and three bluefish using this technique. all between 15 and 20 pounds for 4 hours worth of fishing. We had to let out about 300 feet of line to get the jigs down to the bottom. We would then hold the but of the rod up high and the tip of the rod down and work the rod at a pretty good pace to get any hookups. It was affective and we all had a series of hard fighting blues and stripers. Other boats around us all had fish as well. Must have been a lot of fish in that water as we were in a fleet of about 20 boats. I'm glad I tried that technique but I don't think I'd do it again. I felt I was fighting the tackle more than the fish. I think I'd opt for reducing the trolling speed, use spyderwire and a 3 oz bucktail to do the same thing. with much lighter gear. Like I said a good experience and a very effective method of fishing. A good trip. Chas <'////>< |

Fished the tournament this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday Fished with John
Cherry and Marc Sheridan "the Sheriff" Fishing was great on Saturday morning in
the east river. We had steady action from the first drop. I had 4 big fish on and
managed to get two of them in. One was a 14 pound blue fish and the other was a 39 in 20.4
pound striper. I had two other fish on that seemed at least as big or bigger from the
fight they were putting up one of which I am fairly sure was a big stiper. My fishing
partners also had some nice once that got away. We were not using steel leaders.
Fished on Sunday with John Frank. We tried the same spots, but they weren't as
productive. We managed to get some nice blues in the school under the Brooklyn Bridge and
John landed landed stirpers of 12 and 15.7 pounds. Great weekend.
10/9-10/04 Lower harbor Striped Bass & Bluefish Tournament
| Two great days of fishing! Wonderful weather and a host of big fish. 106
Anglers competed in this years event. Striped Bass and bluefish were all over the lower
harbor of New York City. Birds were working a school of bluefish under the Brooklyn Bridge
all day Sunday. No big prize winners came out of that school but is was some great action
of 6 to 8 pound blues with a couple of bigger bass below. I worked the upper reaches of the East River on Saturday with HRFA member Gil Hawkins for some great striper and bluefish action but nothing in any of the prize winnings. Steve Cherry brought in a couple of big fish that should make it to the prize winnings. Sunday I started at the 31 buoy and wound up working that big school of blues with birds working all over the Brooklyn Bridge. I was working the bass under the blues with a 3 oz. Bucktail. Largest bass of mine was 15 pounds. Not even close tot he big boys some of the other members got. All in all a great two days to be on the water! and a few stripers(4 in the 30 inch range.)
| 10/2 & 3/ 04 Chas Stamm East River This was a great weekend for fishing the lower harbor of New York City. Most members who were out on the water found birds working the surface with 6 to 10 pound bluefish under the birds. An occasional bass could be found under the blues. Most action took place during the early morning low light conditions and continued to around 11 am. Bucktails and diamond jigs were all you needed. Surface plugs created an occasional explosion as bluefish crashed the bait. Very exciting weekend in the harbor for fishing. |

On The
Explorers fished from The Explorers were jigging Sibiki rigs to catch the Snapper Blues and a simple Porgy rig with sand worm bits to haul in hundreds of Porgies. Most of the Snapper Blues were tagged and many of the larger Porgies as well. Not only were these Explorers catching their own fish, hey also were trained in the art of handling a live fish to remove the hook and proper methods of returning the catch to the sea to be caught another day. Once again a great day was had by all and their were lots of smiling faces. Al White |
| 9/19/04 Mark Strober Lower Harbor NYC Bass & Blues Fishin' Mission -- NOAA weather radio was calling for gail warning Sunday 9/19/04 but my addiction to fishing wispered in my ear "JUST GO". All the way to the ramp was thinking I must be nuts, trees bent over and wind howlling. Well screw mother nature! Had a great day fishing the surrounding areas of NY Harbor, with lots of large blues (around 15) and striped bass to 36 inches. (around 10 stripers). Left em biting as it started to get dark. Very few boats out due to the weather conditions. The only other baot fishing along side me had several triple header blues for the kids on board, heard the kids yelling about 1/4 mile away ( or was it their dads ) ! Tight lines to all! |

Trip On The
Explorers fished from The Explorers were jigging Sibiki rigs to catch the Snapper Blues and a simple Porgy rig with clam bits to haul in hundreds of Porgies. All of the Snapper Blues were tagged and many of the larger Porgies as well. Not only were these Explorers catching their own fish, hey also were trained in the art of handling a live fish to remove the hook and proper methods of returning the catch to the sea to be caught another day. The
best part of the day was the smiling faces of these Explorers as they ventured into the
exciting and fulfilling realm of Sport fishing. Who knows where one of these young
Explorers may wind up

Fished the East River today for some non-stop action of striped bass and bluefish action. The bass ranged up to 15 pounds and the bluefish were in the 7 to 10 pound range. Charlie Rigs and bucktails were the bait of choice. Water temps were 75 degrees. We found fish everywhere we tried. The Coast Guard allowed us to fish in certain restricted zones for three hours before asking us to move. They were polite and regretted having to ask us to leave the area. Guess it just depends on who is in the Coast Guard boats and how strict they want to be.
| 9/11/04 Mark Strober 9-11 security issues Fishin' Mission : What started out to be a great day on the water, turned out to be a total waste of Fuel-time and money! Thanks to our United States Coast Guard and the poor attempt of homeland security, fishing boats were banned ffrom fishing the waters off New York Harbor, Statue of Liberty, and East River. Due to the 3rd year anniversay of 9/11. How does a bunch of small boats fishing bother anyone or anything? I could understand checking us out. But banning us to fish is getting a little over board. And for one thing I understand all about Sept. 11th My cousin was killed in tower 1 and i was forced to closed my bussiness of 19 years. Well like the Coastie said to me "There's always tommorrow! The blues were breaking on the surface early then it was all bass later on. Just an added
note I also got my first grand slam of the season on Saturday 9/4/04, it was my best day
fishing this season so far, the weather was great and like mark said the weakies were flying over the rails, they took everything from
sandworms, jigs plastics, etc. you dont get to many days like that, lets hope that
we dont get hit by any of these storms, looks like the fishing is starting to shape
up, see you on the water.

| 8/9/04 Chris Rood Stripers Kentucky! I am glad to be receiving the awesome newsletter each month out here in Ohio. Wishin' I was fishin' where you guys are going. Making the best of things with what there is to work with out here in the midwest, my son and I go to Cumberland Lake in Kentucky a couple of times of year. The recent trip although slow was productive. I caught this 37" and 23# striper at night in the river below the dam due to low productivity up on the lake for two days. I had my 8"6" Loomis with 12# Spiderline on an Okuma Granite 50 spinning reel and a 5 inch "glow" white crankbait. My buddy controlled the boat as I fought the fish manuvering the fish away from the current in the calmer side of the river. I fought him for 15 minutes and as we boated him the crankbait fell out minus two sets of hooks still ingaged in the fishes mouth. What a rush! Still not world class like the Hudson River but I'm working on it for next springs run out there. Chris Rood |

8/8/04 Freddie the J Fluke Rhode Island
Spent a week fluke fishing in Rhode Island near Point Judith out of my
14 foot aluminum skiff. Between myself and four other family members
and friends we probably boated 50 fluke, 20-25 of which met the 17 and
1/2 inch minimum. Drifted using a combination of fluke bellies and
minnows, which we trapped each night. We kept virtually all of the
keepers and I returned home with about 6 pounds of filets. Also got one
small blue fish.

Boat: Easy Go

Report:
Got to the Mud Buoy about 10am, anchored up in two ft seas started chumming and chunking
with bunker we had the blues in about 5 minutes. As the day progressed the wind increased
to over 20 knots and made fishing in a deep V hull uncomfortable. But that didn't stop us,
we must have caught between 35 to 40 fish using light spinning tackle with 12 lb test
mono, we had fish on continuously and a couple of times had three on at once. I'm sure we
lost another 10 to fifteen fish to break offs. The fish ran from 8 to 12 lbs . All fish
were released. We left about 2PM a bunch of weary fisherman and rode the 4 ft waves back
to NY Harbor
Another great day of fishing !!

Bluefish Went to the "Farms" area after checking out the Mud Buoy. Arrived about 10 am to find the Bluefish fleet anchored up and picking fish. Found a spot to anchor up and started chumming and using bunker as bait. The first fish hit after about five minutes and they kept on biting until about 2 pm . No time for eating and drinking at all as we always had fish on our light tackle rods with 12 lb test mono. .Fish ran from four to ten pounds. We finally ran out of hooks, so we switched to mega jigs and continued to catch. We must of caught 40 to fifty fish , we didn't have time to count them. Don't ask how many fish we lost during that time due to broken lines etc.ALL fish were released. 6/16/04 Pat G. Striped Bass Catskill Creek
| I went out on the Catskill Creek today near the high school in Catskill. I was looking to catch some small and large mouth bass that frequent the banks there. Spent nearly one and a half hours with a few bites from some bass that I could actually see, using rubber worms and spinners. It was about 80 degrees, calm water, no breeze, and low tide at about 11:00 AM. After going through nearly all of the appropriate gear in my tackle box, I was about ready to give up on the bass and call it a day. There was one long shot lure left. I put the five inch long deep diving shad rapala on the line and cast it out into the creek. After about five retrievals I caught my first ever striped bass. The fish was about 15 or 16 inches and weighed around three pounds. I threw that back, and cast the line for another five minutes when suddenly my line dove deep and I knew I had a large fish on the line. After a minute or two I pulled in a 23 inch striped bass. Since I didn't have a scale on hand I would have to estimate that the fish weighed between eight and ten pounds. I didn't realize that the stripers ran so late and so far north this time of the year. I will send in photos later. Pat G. |

6/14/04 Sany Hook Warnings from the Coast Guard from Tom Pacman
| INFORMATION TO ALL FISHERMEN IN THE SANDY HOOK AREA (1) At the Atlantic Highlands Harbor launching ramp, the Navy has posted sign's warning boaters not to travel inside the white restricted buoy's that ring the ammo pier. Anyone who drifts, runs, or anchors inside the white buoy's will be fined $500.00, no exceptions, you will be fined. No warning's as they did in the past. We are at war and the Navy views all boaters as potential threats to their ships. You will be boarded by the gunship that patrols the area and your vessel will be checked. Also noted that the area around the pier has been expanded. To see a Navy Gunship coming at you with the seaman aiming the machine gun at you can be an awesome sight. Please stay outside the white buoy's. (2) On Sat. June 12, 04, I spoke with Conservation Officer Shannon Martiak from the Division of Fish & Wildlife at the A.H. Marina. He and another officer were checking size and bag limits of fish on all boats coming into Leonardo and Atlantic Highlands Launching Ramps. They have fined 26 fishermen for under sized fluke in Leonardo alone in just 3 hours.. Each undersized fluke is a $45.00 fine. Any undersized striped bass has a fine of $150.00. These fishermen are the typical weekend worriers and not your average sportsman but with limited man power in the enforcement field, one can see how many other poachers get away with non-legal sized fish. These fishermen make up 80% of the fishing public on Saturday's and Sunday's according to the officers. Enjoy your fishing but don't try to stretch that 16 inch fish unless you have $45. Maybe you can post this on the club web site and print in the newsletter. We have many guys that fish this area. See ya on the water, Tom Paciorkowski, boat name - Pacman ll, 19 foot Trophy Walk Around, channel 9 on VHF. |
| 6/13/04 Phil Kozak Raritan Bay Fluke Entered the JCCA fluke tourament. Had a good time but no big fluke. Sunday I had a report of large stripers off of Momouth Beach so I had a crew and decicded to run the 30 or so miles to that area. Left edgewater 5:30 and as we came around the hook down by the nude beach the small blues were up on top so we stopped to have some fun catching them on light tackle. Casting small jigs and avas we kept 12 for dinners. Moved down to Momouth beach and nothing was happening there moved futher south and still nothing so we came back and started fishing for Fluke. The fish were tight to the beach just as you came up from 20 ft to 15 ft. We could drift north due to the south winds and continued to catch many shorts, with occasional keeper. As the south wind started to honk we left the fish biting and headed back home. Wind was blowing 20 and the bay had a building sea. Stopped at the Bayrigde flats and the drift was from the south to the north with the tide and took a nice 28 flattie. The northwest corner had some large fish concentrations, but we couldn't hook up. The worst part of the day was when we stopped for gas man $2.40 for a gallon. $400 for two days. You know the great theft of the century is now 0ccuring. Phil Kozak NFA |

| 6/6/04 Al White East River Striped Bass 32.5 Lbs I fished today Sunday, June 6, 2004, and caught a New Personal Best. It has been almost 35 years since I caught my original personal best, which was a 28 lb. Striped Bass caught in Vineyard Sound at Gay Head on the Island of Martha's Vineyard in the fall of 1970. I know that I had forgotten what a thrill that was. In fact I had a hard time remember any of the details. It's called senior moments, something you younger members can look forward to. I received a couple reports of big stripers being caught in Long Island Sound and the East River (Check out the report from Chas Stamm) and thought I might get very lucky. I got a late start this afternoon and left the dock at 2:00 PM. My first stop was the East River and on the first drift it produced a 34 inch striper. In fact on each of the next three drifts they produced three more stripers from 31 to 33 inches. Then nothing for the next five drifts, someone must have turned off the switch. I headed south to the and after three or fours drifts their and nothing I was going to call it a day. I headed back to and decided to take one more drift. About half way through the drift my rod doubled over and I thought I was hung up on the bottom. But it suddenly started to move and I new it was a big fish. About 30 minutes later I got my first look at that broad tail and large bass. I managed to get the net out of the rocket launcher and now I am trying to hold onto the rod in one hand and net the fish with my other hand. After a couple of misses I finely managed to net the fish. Bottom line it measured 44 inches and weighed 32.5 lb. on my digital scale. It took me a couple of minutes to revive and release my new Personal Best Striped Bass. I think I am going fishing again tomorrow. See you on the water. Al White |
6/5/04 Chas Stamm and Joe Curvino Manhattan Striped Bass 43 Pounds!
| I fished with HRFA member Joe Curvino today and had myself a personal
best for striped bass. Joe managed to land six bass up to 15 pounds and one
bluefish. Charlie rigs and dead eels were the bait we were using. I managed to
release three striped bass and sadly wound up with one keeper. The big fish when
weighed on the boat came in at 46 pounds and with a taped measure over his body was 47
inches. Took almost 20 minutes to bring her in. Tried very hard for almost an
hour to revive the fish but to no avail. Didn't like that at all. Really
wanted to release that fish. Kept going belly up with seagulls all around waiting to
rip in to the fish. Had to keep him. Interesting enough the fish had a 12 inch
partially digested sturgeon in it's belly. When we got to some level, more calm
water...the fish's final weight, after an hour's worth of revival, came in at 43
pounds and on a flat deck, 45 inches. With a tape over the
belly of the fish an extra two inch rise was achieved. Here are some photos of the bass. Click on a photo.

The wind was out of ther East and ther water temp was 62 at the romar shoals. That's where started out this morning, Sat June 5. Cast to small pods of blues and caught as many as you wanted. Released them all. From there we went to the south shore of Staten Island and again saw great schools of Blue fish. Mind you no Stripers. We finally went over to the inside of Sandy Hook and caught a number of keeper fluke. Keeping 10 for future dinners. The rain held off untill 3 pm and then we called it quits. old Jinny who caught a 24 lb. Striped Bass the day before. We all had a wonderful time and

11.2 pounds. Taylor had a 7 pound blue, Kelsey a 3 and 8 pounder and Jinny and Veronica
three pounders. After fishing from 3 pm until 10:30 pm we had a great day. It is great

I took my kids fishing with Jinny a Korean friend from the Fresh Picked Grocery store in
Hoboken. I had to write about how Jinny never fished before and after a lot of work pulled
in her first fish ever in her life which was a 24 lb. Striper. Jinny was totally thrilled
and we got some nice pictures. She took it home for her parents to eat and she is now an
official fisherperson. Every time I am going out fishing she is asking to come along. What
a long fight and what a memory for me. Great going Jinny. Sorry this is such a late report

Great fish and a very long fight in the rod holder for Taylor. So far this year Taylor is
out fishing her older sister Kelsey. She spends more time paying attention to the fishing
and it is paying off. Sorry this report is so late. I wrote down the information on paper
and kept on saying I would add it to the HRFA website and then I misplaced it. Well now I
found it and have entered all information.
The fishing was great in May and June in the Lower Harbor and then really slowed down in
July. Fluke seem to be the targeted fish since the water got too warm.
| 5/30/04 Phil Kozak Raritan Bay Fluke Made my way south Friday night. Hit a log just north of ther Bear Mt Bridge. Took my time getting to Van Dohln Marine arrived safe and sound. Sunday took a ride to make sure that no major damage was done. I will pull the wheels have them balanced. Found True World Marine and gassed up at the Ferry terminal. Gas was 230.00, but at Liberty marine it was 219.00. Trolled a lure over at Bay Bridge flats and thern ran over to the flats south of the Verizano. Lots of bunker, but I was by myself and couldn't position the boat to throw the net. Released 10 fluke two were 17 inches, I wasn't sure if 17 inches was legal. I was a grea day on the water. shorts, very close most were ½ inch to short, fishing south of the V.Z. bridge. We
decided to head back, on our way back to Jersey City around the Bayridge
flats we saw bunker breaking water so we stopped to snag them, on my first snag a 36 inch
bluefish gobbled the bunker, got the fish in the boat, on my next snagged bunker a 44inch
35 lb Striped Bass whacked that bunker, got the fish into the boat took a picture and
released the fish, for about an hour we tried snagging more bunker but couldnt hook
up, fish would hit the bunker take half of it or the whole thing but no hook ups, but
considering we didnt do all that bad. |

| 5/ 18 2004 Capt. Chris Albany
Stripers & Shad Boy, was the wind blowing today! North wind at 20-30 mph with a outgoing tide this A.M. Started with jigging herring and alewives south of 378 bridge they were in thick, two dozen in five minutes. Then a kidney pounding ride to below the Boston Spur if I-90 along the east side. Waves were rolling at five feet and thought the trip was bust but the screen showed some heavy concentration of fish between 35 and 38 feet over 42 feet. Put out the herring and needed six oz. to keep it down and were it to fish immediately. Three fish within twenty minutes between 19 and 26 lbs. The biggest was an absolute cow full of eggs and all were released to carry on. As the tide slowed so did the bite nothing else there so we moved. Noted thee different Bald eagles just south of the new Schodack Island launch. The site looks great and the launch appears protected so you trailer boys take note. Smoother ride back north with following seas stopped at two other areas south of the port of Albany with no luck and nothing seen on the electronics. Finished before lunch by trolling some darts for shad around Green Island with good luck and boated four with one hen about seven lbs. |
5/18/04 Fishin Mission Raritan Bay Striped Bass
Fishin' Mission fished Raritan Bay Tuesday 5/18 with Ron Valverde. Despite the weatherman calling for lousy weather, we had great weather, light winds. We caught large stripers ( 44"-- 24 pounds, 38", 2 x 36" and many others ) Blues were a pain but were plentiful. We also fluked for a while with about 10 keeper size fluke to 20" and several shorts. All fish were released except 3 fluke which a friend wanted to eat. Ron was the happy angler with the largest fluke and striper. ( But I tell him captain gets all the credit ) Tight lines and the heck with the weather forecasters!
5/18/04 Bill Greene Carp Brewster, NY
14 lb/11 oz Carp, caught and released from the Diverting Reservoir (NYC
Permit Water) at 1:15 PM. Used combination corn kernels, bread and strawberry dough
- gave up seven years ago trying to figure out which was best - ever since
then I always put combo of all three on hook. 12 lb. test.
Lost another earlier at 10:45 AM - estimate at least as big - when fish took
off along shoreline, shredding line on rocks, etc. Sinker is rigged as
fish-finder/on line, so fish which breaks off is rid of sinker.
| 5/17/04 Al White Raritan Bay Striped Bass & Blues Fished today with Glen Blank and Wayne Guider first all out trip on new boat and what a trip. Pulled out of Englewood boat basin at 8:15 am headed south to Raritan Bay. Glen had picked up a bushel of clams yesterday from Julian's in Atlantic Highlands and we used them to start a slick going. A half hour later we had nothing. The weather was turned nasty wind blowing out of the East at 10 to 15 mph with gust up to 25. We decided to move further south. We started the clam slick going again presto and I hooked up with the first fish of the day and the first fish on board the new boat and it was a 34 inch Striper. We fished for the next 6 hours and caught about 30 Bass from 24 to 34 inches with most of the bass over 28 inches and a few additional Bluefish throne in for good luck. Their out there, so if you get a chance "Go south to Raritan Bay". As for the new Parker it is beyond all my expectations "what a boat". Thanks, Al White |
| 5/16/04 James Byrne Striped Bass Raritan Bay Fishing was good outside the Vz. on Sunday afternoon. Lots of cocktail sized blues on bunker chunks and we picked up two bass trolling. We had bass slamming schools of bunker around the boat but couldn't set up fast enough to get one on the line. |

5/13/04 Chas Stamm & Joe Curvino Lower Harbor Bass & Blues
Fished with Joe Curvino on Saturday and did not have a very active day. Fishing on the outside of the Vz. Bridge seemed to be much better than the inside of the Vz. Bridge. Joe and I stayed inside and managed to bring in one bass, about 9 pounds and one bluefish, about 7 pounds. Chunked bunker was the bait used. Reports from outside the Vz. from various members of the HRFA confirmed that the fish are here...just outside, and not where we were. Chas <'////><
5/13/04 David McMillen Highland Falls Striped Bass
Chas,
Decided to try the incoming today and finally hit the motherload. From
Dennings Point drifting up to the bridge it was absolutely loaded. Even
had one follow a hooked one into the net. That's right.. one on the hook
and one no hook in the net. Doubles the cheap way. They were running at
8-10 ft. in 34 ft. of water. Water temp 61. These fish got so thick you
could feel them rubbing against the line. Released 9 fish, all between 14
- 18 lbs. in 45 min... then the wind. I just want to say. It was calm out
there for a couple hours. Then right after sunset out of nowhere a stiff
east wind. 4 footers in 2 mins. Took me 1 hr 45 to make it back to
Highland Falls. I worry sometimes that some of the folks out there in
small boats, especially those flat bottom bass boats.. are gonna get raked
into the water when that happens. There was about 7 of them around me in
the dark. I have a 30 ft. boat and I was taking water over the bow and
over the windshield at times. Tip is.. have a plan...be prepared to get
in quick and LIFEJACKETS everyone! I know some of these small fishing
boats probably have no flares. Dudes... get some. Now!

| Chas, we where in the River by 7:30 fishing. It was very slow, and did not hear any chatter to the contrary. Around noon the fish started to come through considerably stronger, and then started to feed. We caught a total of 12. All but one on bloods, and one on an eel. Then the weather warnings started coming. We knew it would be a short day, and got convinced real quick when the lightning started to come over Mt. Beacon. Oh, here is a little trivia. Mt. Beacon is the Mountain pictured in the NY State Flag. Our heaviest fish today was caught by Steve, the one with the "Sponge Bob" Scarf on his head, weighing in at 15 3/4 Lbs. I added a picture that should evoke some good memories for all of you. I will call it "Tight Line/Tip Up." ChasBo |

Twenty Explore 2000 children participated along with their teachers, chaperones and HRFA volunteers (Darren Cardinal, Ralph Roth, Chuck Mitchell, and Tim Burden). | 5/9/04 Newburgh Stripers Chasbo!Chas,
Sunday was a day of downpours here in Newburgh, and looked to be a washout for getting in a day of fishing. You see I was to take my son, and his girlfriend out for the day. They just are not equipped like us hard core fishaholics. Anyway, I did hold out hope, and it paid off. The sun broke through around four, and we headed for Ceely's Bait Shop before they closed. It was all worth the two hours we spent out there off Bannermans Island. We hit it right, and caught plenty. Best of all Leah caught the first one, and her first Striper ever. |

5/8/04 Phil Kozak Roundout Creek Striped Bass
Fished Saturday out of Rondout went south small school near hidden harbor, but no bites. moved to south of the water plant west of the green can in 6 ft of water. School of large bass released 24, 25, 19, and 12 lb females. When the tide slowed so did the bite. Moved down the western shore and saw no more schools` Ended the day with those releases.
Sunday was worse with no major schools on the western side. Wind against the tide made it Saturday and released two fish 19 lbs and a small fish 24 inches. Moved south to black creek no fish and then went north to south bay for the incoming. There were scattered schools of bass, but when the tide started to run they moved off the flat.
I am concerned that we have not found the normally large schools of spawners. My hope is that they are still south and due to the winter will arrive later in May. My real concern in the fact that these kill tournaments may have an effect on this spawning biomass. I hold my final opinion untill the end of May and see if these fish that normally spawn in the Kingston area show up.

Plentiful herring, one big shad, and a 32 inch striper, probably about
15 pounds. Treated the striper for hook in mouth disease and released.
Striper fell to a live herring. Saw a few other stipers boated. Will
try again 5/13 and 5/15.

fish was 15.5 Lbs. Ed realized he had on 12 lb. test, and people kept riding back, and
forth wondering what the heck he had on for soooo long. I have to agree with the posting about the ignorant boaters, everywhere, it seems. Not just Newburgh. 5/5/04 Newburgh Beacon Bridge Dave McMillen Striped Bass & Some Courtesy
Hi Chas,
Went out for the second time this year. Saturday was really windy and
because the waves were breaking over the bow we had to turn around. Today
was much calmer. Water temp 56. Fished east side from Newburgh Beacon
bridge back south to Dennings Point. Spotted small schools of shorties
here and there and released 4 fish from 20" and below on bloods and sands.
Hard work, fish were not very aggressive. Trying again tomorrow.
Reading Leonids report I just want to say something. It's getting worse
out there as far as lack of courtesy and safety. In the past 2 years many
of the fisherman who come to our area to fish lack any knowledge of the
power of this river. They are seasonal fisherman and only come for the
striper run. Many swill beer, play loud music and travel between the
gaggle of boats at top speed, crossing over the lines of many of us. They
do not realize they are responsible for their wakes and the damage they can
cause when you are speeding by someone 30 ft. away at 30 miles an hr. One
day last year when I took the kids out I had one guy almost take my bow
off. When I motioned to him to slow down, he pulled up next to me, 40 oz.
in hand and screamed many expletives as well as try to board my boat and
engage in a fistfight. Not a bunch of happy kids after that. Anyone is
welcome to fish on this very public water, but, for the boaters like myself
who do it all year, abide by the rules, laws and are safety conscious, it
is getting way out of control and is only a matter of time before someone
is seriously injured. I would like to see more presence from the police
this year. It's really that bad. I personally picked up 6 plastic
shopping bags full of trash that was just thrown into the water as well
today. Of course, 3 of them contained empty beer cans. It took a long
time to clean this river up and get it fishable again. I take it
personally when someone trashes it. Forget about anyone assisting a
disabled boater. They come to fish and they don't care. Like Phil K.
said. I monitor chan 68 also. Anyone who needs assistance at anytime with
anything, please hail the vessel Ophelia while in the Newburgh/Cornwall
area this year. Our crew will be more than happy to help. Hope it's not
that bad down in the harbor.

| 5/3/04 Phil Kozak Rondout I have been fishing the Pocket Rocket out of Rondout Yatch Basin for the past three weekends. The wind against tide and high winds have been a real problem. We have not had a 20 fish day as of yet. Last Saturday4/24/04 we released 10 fish with the largest being 20 lbs and Sunday we released a 25 lb Bass and lost another big fish just south of the bridge This past Saturday 5/1/04 was the start of the biger fish. We released a 31, 20, and 16 lbs Bass, plus 9 small fish from 16 to 26 inches. There were larger schools of big spawners moving north Saturday. Most of our action has been north of the Rhine Cliff Bridge. Some of the slow action can be attributed to the large schools of small fish. They are all over the river in the shallows many times they will block out ther sounder. Chas pleas pass this mesage on to any angler who gets into trouble. Call me on the radio channel 68 and if I can assist in any way I will. I did not see any angler rowing a boat on Sat or Sun. Phil Kozak National Fishing Association |

| 3/27/04 Ken Sheldon Croton Striped Bass My
dad Ray, my son Matt and I finally got back out on the river after the long winter.
Water is still cold at 41-44 [depending on the area] but weather was great.
We fished the Croton area, and we caught 3 with the biggest just shy of 5 lbs. All
caught on bloods, all swimming upstream last we saw them. No big fish but it was good to
get out fishing.

3/12 - 3/18 2004 Chas Stamm Costa Rica! How bad can this be?! Put together a trip with a couple of HRFA members and went to Costa Rica for four days of fishing. Stayed on the southern Pacific side of the country at the Golfito sailfish Rancho. What a great place. Details will be posted at www.chasfishing.com I can tell you this is one of the finest fishing camps on the planet. The fishing was outstanding. I guess we raised an average of 10 to 15 sailfish per day. per boat. One day, HRFA member Joe Curvino raised 40 sailfish by himself!. I guess we averaged getting in the boat and releasing 3 to 4 sailfish per day for each angler. We fished two to a boat in new 27 foot Ocean Master Boats. Roosterfish up to 25 pounds, Spanish mackerel, dorado, pompano and a host of other fish made this a very special adventure. |
|
The sailfish were outstanding. Joe used his flyrods for the most part and I used conventional gear of a Calcutta 400 and a triggerstick to bring them in. Same stuff I use for the Stripers in the Hudson only these fish were all between 80 and 120 pounds. One of the benefits of being a member of a fishing club like the HRFA is you have the ability to team up with other anglers and put together some of these exotic trips. We have so many members that you are sure to find people that wish to share your style of trip. Chas <'////>< |

| 2/20/2004 Chasbo Squirrel Fishing! Here at Orange Lake the ice is better than a foot thick, and Top Water are not too successful right now. I'm not to keen on fishing through the ice, but there is a winter fish I won't pass up. That is "Squirrel Fishing." The Oaks, and Maples on my property yield a huge number of Gray Squirrel. So, I take a good stiff six foot Ugly Stick, and my Shimano 4000 spinning real, and tie on, not hook, a nice piece of stale Italian bread. Yeah, you got it, cast it out to one of those gray rats, and your in for your first, "Squirrel On!" You can get them on the ground, or up in the tree. They hold onto that bread for dear life. If your bread holds, and they don't get it, you can get them up to around ten feet from you, then off they go. Yes, fishing is my passion, and the winter gets you to be creative. So, go down to your local bakery, and buy some stale bread, go to the Park, and give it a go. See you at Newburgh Harbor in the Spring, ChasBo |
Sunday, February 1, 2004. Glass Lake, Rensselaer County, NY
Fished through the ice in the afternoon with tip ups and minnows.
Weather was in the low 20's, breezy, partly cloudy. Got about 8 flags,
landed two, an 18" pickerel and an 20" largemouth bass. The bass had to
go 3-4 pounds and stripped all of the line off the reel. Both went back
into the hole. Ice is about 20 inches thick. Gonna try again this
Saturday. A trout would be nice.
Ice fishing is OK, but I can't wait 'till the spring striper run on the
Hudson!
