The Pride of the H.R.F.A. |
|
Project to Save our Historical Heritage
By Joe Albanese |
|
Robert H. Boyle's dream eventually became a reality when the Hudson River Fishermen's Association (formed in 1966) launched its Riverkeeper boat in 1983. |
|
|
THEN
The H.R.F.A. created the world's first Waterkeeper Organization. The photo above shows the 1983 maiden-launch of it's 25-foot wooden boat tasked with patrolling the Hudson for polluters. It was initially piloted by Capt. John Cronin. |
|
|
NOT TOO LONG AGO
Up until Oct. 5th, the original Hudson River Fishermen's Assn's Riverkeeper boat was all but forgotten; rotting away in the woods in Garrison, NY. Now she is at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City awaiting her total makeover. |
|
Boat Restoration Project Update |
|
Dave Mercer and Arnie Ulrich met at the Liberty Landing Marina service yard Saturday October 19, 2019. They built a tent structure and covered the boat with a 7 mil thick green 19' by 30' tarp . The structure is mostly comprised of 2" by 6" wood planks and runs from bow to stern. They got the job done in a little over three hours.
It is interesting to note that they found two 40-gallon fuel tanks amidships. One on each side, at deck height, of the boat.
Before work was started Heather Gibbons from Fund For a Better Waterfront took pictures and asked for a review of the boat's history and how it got to Jersey City. Arnie Ulrich and Ivan Garcia provided that information. She wants to put together a power point or video and will get more pictures from Joe Albanese.
Beginning in the Spring of 2020 volunteers will start working to refurbish her to her former days of glory when she was the world's first and only riverkeeper vessel. |

November 23, 2019 |
Bloomers Beach is located at the north end of the Englewood Boat Basin.
Please note that the River Road Edgewater/Fort Lee entrance to the Palisades Interstate Park is closed. Instead use E Palisades Ave or Exit 1 off the Palisades Interstate Parkway and go down the winding Henry Hudson Drive to the Englewood Boat Basin. |
|
Bloomers Beach Cleanup |
We will be at Boomers Beach this Saturday November 23rd from 9:00AM-1:00PM to pick up debris. This is our way of caring for the beach & thanking PIP for allowing us to have our Family Day there free of charge.
The is a work PARTY so we will feed everyone who pitches in to help hotdogs, burgers & non-alcoholic drinks. Please email your RSVP to the event organizer Gil Hawkins (gilhawkins@verizon.net) so we'll be sure to have enough food. |

Come Fish "The T"
Hoboken, New Jersey |
|
DETAILS: The Hudson River is one of the most productive and diverse fisheries on the northern coast. And it’s no secret that the lower part of the Hudson River is the place to catch a trophy striped bass every fall. So on Sunday, November 3rd all HRFA members are invited to come and fish off Castle Point Pier (locals call it "The T") in Hoboken, NJ. The pier stretches out 125 feet into the river, has one of the best views of NYC skyline and provides excellent fishing structure.
Striped bass are not the only fish on the menu. You will have the opportunity to fish for bruiser bluefish, blackfish, ling, tommy cod, and more.
The HRFA encourages tagging fish for science. American Littoral Society tagging kits can be purchased from Kevin Morgan at any HRFA general monthly meeting. Tags may also be purchased from the American Littoral Society by clicking here.
Fishing time: 8 am – 12 pm??
Save the date because you don’t want to miss this event.
If anyone has any questions on tackle, baits, etc. reach out to Michael Sardinas at 201-682-9577 or Masardinas@yahoo.com |

Landmark Northeast
Striped Bass Study By
Gray Fishtag Research,
Navionics & The
Fisherman Magazine
Kicks Off On Post-Spawn
Hudson River Stripers
On May 21, 2019 a
trophy-hunting team of
anglers comprised of
staff from the nonprofit
GrayFishTag Research (GFR),
Navionics and The
Fisherman Magazine
hit the Hudson River out
of lower Manhattan in
hopes of successfully
deploying a pair of
satellite tags in two
post-spawn Hudson River
striped bass.
Sponsored by the
electronic mapping
professionals at
Navionics who paid the
expense of a pair of
Wildlife Computer
MiniPAT devices, the
first Northeast Striped
Bass Study will monitor
the large-scale
movements and behavior
of these fish. Data
collected during
deployment is archived
in onboard memory to
collect water
temperature, pressure,
and light data. Once the
tags pop off at a
pre-programmed date
(October 21) they’re
designed to float to the
surface where they’ll
relay summaries of the
stored data via Argos
Satellites.
At the completion of the
study, folks will get a
chance to visit TheFisherman.com
to see exactly where
these fish traveled
through a Navionics
app. “We’re really
hoping to learn a lot,
and do a lot of good for
this research for this
fishery,” said Paul
Michele, National Sales
Manager at Navionics
Americas. PSATs have
previously been used on
a limited basis in
striped bass research,
typically to track a
week or two of
post-release behavior to
assist in gathering
mortality
estimates. But the
five-month study using
the latest, greatest
technology on the market
today carries a hefty
price tag – roughly
$5,000 for each tag.
“This is a medium,
Domeier, nylon anchor
and we’re actually going
to stick the fish about
5 centimeters from the
dorsal midline, at an
angle, into the muscle
or pterygiophores, so
that we don’t actually
hit any vital organs,”
said Leah Baumwell, the
Director at Gray FishTag
before carefully
inserting the first
MiniPAT device into a
34-inch striper. Named
after noted researcher,
Dr. Michael L. Domeier,
the nylon anchor is
attached to 10
centimeters of stainless
steel cable to for
holding the device in
place. “We chose this
particular length
because we feel that it
provides a small amount
of drag on the fish so
it won’t actually pull
out,” said Baumwell,
describing how a small
charge set for October
21 will ultimately
dislodge the tag after
five months.
“The key to what we’re
doing is open access, we
want to share all the
information from all
these products with the
public,” said Bill
Dobbelaer, President of
Gray Fishtag Research. Dobbelaer
said similar satellite
tags have been deployed
in other parts of the
world on roosterfish,
marlin, swordfish,
marlin and even
barracuda with great
success, and he’s
optimistic that the
Northeast Striped Bass
Study can help provide
more data for scientists
and researchers working
with striped bass
studies. “We’re hopeful
that all this data that
we’re collecting can be
used someday to make
really good decisions on
managing all these fish
species that we love,”
Dobbelaer added.
The team utilized two
local charter boats in
the inaugural study,
placing one PSAT in a
34-inch striper caught
aboard Rocket Charters
based out of New York
City and a second
42-inch striped bass
while onboard Fin Chaser
charters based in New
Jersey. Each striped
bass was also named for
the study, Liberty and
Freedom, and were out of
the water no more than 2
minutes to be measured
and tagged, and were
released back into New
York Harbor in the
shadow of the Statue of
Liberty.
The fish were caught
using menhaden, a
favored local bait for
anglers during the
spring run, with circle
hooks used for rigging
the baits to ensure safe
and healthy release.

the tagging trip, go to
